Memo To Open Borders Folks

The figures were pro rata among the highest in the EU. Illegals came, too, mainly after 1990, with estimates running from 100,000 to 200,000. The Dutch supplied funding for mosques, religious schools, language courses and housing. They passed special legislation so Moroccans could have dual nationality, as Moroccan nationality is inalienable under Moroccan law. Political correctness, of the sort that produced Harry Enfield’s famously relaxed Amsterdam policemen, reigned. Issues felt at street level — immigration, crime, culture, national identity — were seldom discussed by the political elite.
Replace Morrocan with Mexican and one gets a rather… eerie picture.

Don’t you think this gives credence to the claim that the problem is lack of assimilation and not the influx of immigrants?
I think attacking bi-lingual education, and welfare checks for illegals is important. I had once supported the National Guard on the southern border. But…they’re kind of…busy at the moment. And probably will be for who knows how long.
Besides Mexican immigrants minus liberal institutions equals a pro-life majority.

Well John the problem is that assimilation is not going on, and it is creating a dangerous rift.

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that assimilation IS going on, albeit slowly but surely. The problem is that the smaller the immigrant group the faster they assimilate. The Irish took forever, from about 1840-1935 or so to assimilate even partially into Anglo society, the reason mostly being they were such a large group and they kept coming. The same is true of Mexicans, they keep coming and they are a massive % (relatively speaking) of the population. If we choke off the border now, the Mexicans in this country will assimilate just fine in 50 to 60 years. The problem that remains is that the border is wide open.
