Truth vs. Lies

Written by Jack O'Reilly on March 30th, 2005

Here is an excellent response by Deroy Murdock to Peggy Noonan’s article that Gary posted regarding Terri Schiavo. There are plenty of people who believe in transcendent truths that don’t go to religious services or believe in an after life. Would anyone claim that Aristotle or Plato could not know that starving someone to death was wrong because they lived before Jesus walked on the earth? I think that the pro-life community needs to heed Murdock’s advice.

I posted Peggy Noonan’s piece, and you have completely misunderstood it. She wasn’t arguing that all atheists, secular humanists, etc, are incapable of morality or living an ethical life. Of course not. However, she does argue that a culture that removes all mention of God from the collective, national consciousness, is setting the stage for moral depravity. Again, this does not mean that individual atheists cannot live moral lifestyles. Yet, it does not negate the fact that societal secularism, on a large scale, results in the sanctioning of previously unthinkable institutions like abortion and the starving of Terry Schiavo. In a better day (40’s and 50’s), when God was an accepted part of the national identity, these things - killing unborn babies, terminating Terry Schiavo- would have been all but unthinkable; they would have been non-issues. Indeed, secularism - a culture devoid of God - is the at the root of our cultural problem.
