CRNC Race Update

Thursday, April 7th, 2005

Thanks to CRNCTruthCaucus’s delegate tally I put together a little something. The magic number to win is 83 delegates.

All declared states (including NM for Gourley)
Davidson - 47
Gourley - 61
Undecided - 57

Declared states + leans
Davidson - 54
Gourley - 66
Undecided - 45

UPDATE:
Declared states + leans + a few tipoffs
Davidson - 65
Gourley - 70
Undecided - 30

The order of reliability of the #’s gets worse as you add in the leans and tipoffs but just so folks get an idea of how it is shaping up I posted them.

Now obviously this race is neck and neck and it may come down to delegates breaking pledges and the like, but at this juncture the race is clearly Gourley’s still to lose. It is a sad indictment of the College Republicans nationally that Gourley even has this many delegates, but I digress…

Blogger puts liberal Canadians on the defensive

Thursday, April 7th, 2005

This is a great story in today’s New York Times about a lone blogger blowing lid off on story uncovering the corruption in Canada’s liberal government. The blog is called Captainsquarters and been getting tones of Canadian Traffic.

April 6 - An American blogger has suddenly emerged as a force in Canadian politics.

Edward Morrissey, a 42-year-old Minneapolis area call-center manager who runs a Web log, or blog, called Captain’s Quarters as a hobby, last Saturday began posting allegations of corruption that reached the highest levels of the Canadian Liberal Party. The postings violate a publication ban instituted a few days earlier by a federal judge, Justice John Gomery, who is leading an investigation into accusations of money laundering and kickbacks in a government program from the 1990’s that was aimed at undermining Quebec separatists.

The scandal, which involves government payments of up to $85 million to a handful of Montreal advertising firms for little or no work, has dominated national politics for a year and led to the Liberals losing their majority in the House of Commons last June.

But Justice Gomery moved to limit dissemination of information from the otherwise public hearing in Montreal so as not to influence potential jurors for coming trials in which a government bureaucrat and two advertising executives face criminal charges. Click to continue »

I Endorse . . .

Thursday, April 7th, 2005

No one. Since I am not currently enrolled in college that is probably how it should be, but since I will be again in the fall I will comment on this whole brouhaha (is that spelled right, it looks funny).

The real reason that I endorse no one is that I am having a hard time caring about the outcome of the race anyway. At the end of the day, Gourley if he wins won’t break the CRs, their real strength has always been at the local level. If Davidson wins everyone won’t turn into a homosexual over night. So why not relax, there are bigger fish to fry and whole world is spinning around you. Do some of you realize how important the events of the last year were? I am talking about financial changes, political shifts and massive power struggles that took place all over the world that weren’t necessarily visible on Foxnews, but could be observed by reading between the lines and some local knowledge. So if I had a vote, I would probably go for Davidson, he seems like a nice enough guy. Gourley might be too, but he comes off as a second-rate ward boss from Minneapolis.

I have been slightly annoyed by this campaign because of all the high school, no elementary school name calling. I get a headache every time I read that idiot who keeps writing “Paul can’t read!”. We heard you the first 500 times you schmuck. And all the of the innuendo about Davidson and gays, none of it ever backed up by anything solid. You think that people are so dumb they are gonna think, “Hmmm, Davidson is from California, California is full of gays, Davidson must like gays.”? Guys, up your game. You have no future in politics of any consequence if you think that kind of stuff works. So whichever side bothers me the least between now and whenever you goofballs wrap this shindig up as my blessing.

To Alex, Mark and Gary who do have passions for this race, I understand where you are coming from and none of the above is directed in your general direction of course. I think your support for Davidson stems from a strong ethical background, which is truly admirable and needed in the party of Al D’Amato.

CRNC Hacktocracy

Thursday, April 7th, 2005

This comment was posted on the blog:

OMG…STOP THE PRESSES. You hacks are supporting Michael Davidson…wow, what a shocker. Hey Harris, how did the last CR election you were a part of turn out? Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot…like everything you do in politics it fails…just like this blog endorsing Davidson (which was the worst kept secret in blogging) you will fail again in your quest for the CRNC. BTW…you call yourself a conservative, right? Why don’t we have Michael Davidson talk about were he stands on Gay Rights? I bet you would be in for a shock!

Now I just briefly want to comment on this because I’ve heard this a lot and I think this argument fails on its face value but let me briefly entertain it.
Point 1: This blog has never hidden who it supported, just read any of my posts. It was just that both Alex and Gary felt that they needed to put it in a more formal context.
Point 2: I lost a CR Chapter election by one vote, you are correct. If that somehow refutes my stand on this race I must have missed that day in logic. I think if you would ask any of the Gourley or Davidson people on the ground they will tell you that my race was not about the CRNC, and it was handled honorably by all sides.
Point 3: Yes I do call myself a conservative, and I think I’ve earned the credentials. I could’ve bowed down to the party in Pennsylvania and supported Snarlin’ Arlen but I fought tooth and nail in PA and burned many a bridge because of my stand. That being said this race for CRNC chairman is NOT about positions though I believe you grossly distorted Davidson’s stances. This race is about ethics, and on that ground the only candidate I could support would be Davidson.

The last point I like to make though is that the blog software tracks the IP addresses of its posters, yes, even anonomous. Now you take this for what it is worth but the poster uses an Earthlink account out of Minneapolis, MN. I rest my case…

Note: Hat tip to fellow blogger Andrew for the wonderful word, hacktocracy.
