Any Soccer Fans?

Written by Nate on April 11th, 2005

There has been a lot going on in the sports world as of late, with the Final Four, Tiger winning in Augusta and the start of the baseball season. With the Champions League and World Cup qualifying going on right now, I was wondering if any of our readers are soccer fans. I myself am a fanatic. My favorite club teams are Ajax, Man U, Rangers and DC United. In the world Cup I of course go for USA, but I also am a fan of Ireland. Anyone else?

Though I played in my “yute” in Sydney and Wisconsin I can’t say that I remain much of a fan today. If it’s not college football my heart rate don’t change much. Soccer is very European in that such unmanly behavior as “flopping” has sullied the game beyond repair in my eyes. Flopping is also Europe’s gift to basketball and ice hockey, what a funny coincidence.

Soccer is one of those sports that is best when played, not watched. Hockey, which I also played, falls into this category. Though hockey can be enjoyed live, but never on TV. 2 cents, take it or leave it.

You might be right, I was at the Asia qualifying games in Beijing for the 2004 Olympics. I watched China beat Qatar. It was the first real soccer game I had seen in years and was pretty intertesting, but it still can’t compare to a goal line stand in the fourth quarter when the game is on the line.

The QB is hollering at his RB and then sends the TE in motion to the right. The Will linebacker stunts at the line, the FS screams out the play, 42 Alabama Crush (crash blitz, all go). The ball is snapped, the mike linebacker hurdles over the line to be met in midair by the FB. It was a dive option, a fake! The FB doesn’t have the ball, instead the QB pitches it to the back who is scooting weakside! The strong saftey, out of nowhere, comes up and takes the legs out from under him. He goes down at the half yard line! The crowd roars in a whiskey fueled mania as seismic alarms are going off at the EAS building. Through the confusion and helpless joy, I look skywards and thank God for his great gift to Man.

Yes I know, you don’t have to tell me. I am insane.

College football is one of my favorites because of the rivalries. College football is much more exciting than pro. One of the reasons I like soccer is that it is one of the only sports that has international rivalries.
