Ann Coulter Endorsement
Written by Mark Harris on April 14th, 2005A statment released over the CRNC listserv from Ann Coulter’s PR firm Shirley & Banister states that she is not taking a stand in the race. There are a lot of rumors flying right now, though I am looking into what I can. For now sufice it to say that the only wrongdoing on the part of the Davidson campaign is that they never got her endorsement in writing.
This is what Ann Coulter said on the radio from a transcript:
“He’s fought for conservative principles on America’s most liberal campus, of course I endorse him! Without a doubt he’s well prepared to take the fight to college campuses across America. It’s the new McCarthyism and we have to expose the Left for what they are.”

UPDATE: Now there are some questions to ask on this one as I have been able to confirm that Coulter definitely released that statement available on CRVets but also did make the statement above where she specifically said “of course I endorse him.” This seems to be an unfortunate situation, that I am sure will be spun hard by the Gourley folks over at CRVets but that’s the game ain’t it. To say the endorsement was “faked” is dubious at best, what would be better to say is that there was likely a misunderstanding going on here. There is more developing that I will report as it comes.
UPDATE 2: After some more digging, I think this is honestly a blow to the Davidson campaign as its the loss of a key endorsement, but I do not think it was faked as CRVets claimed. Let’s get serious, if Davidson was going to “fake” an endorsement he wouldn’t have plastered his website with it. He honestly believed Ann Coulter supported him. The long lag between the endorsement in February and its retraction today also indicates that it is likely of recent political origin. Gourley’s campaign isn’t stupid and I am sure they followed up with Coulter’s endorsement in February, and likely found it valid. Somethign occured to cause Ann Coulter to change her mind or atleast rephrase her previous statement. In the end it looks to be a miscommunication or something much more benign than is being played out. So while I think the Davidson campaign deserves criticism for not getting it in writing, it certainly is not a deal breaker or shows some kind of major inescapable fault.

If Davidson takes every well wisher as an official endorsement that is a reason to be concerned. It never occurred to his campaign to call her office and get it in writing or were they content to just release unconfirmed info to their whole list serve. Maybe when Davidson met Governor Schwarenegger and told him he was running, the Governor responded “good luck!” WOW another official endorsement for Michael Davidson.

These blogs become more dismal every day. It obvious that CRs across the country are divided, but tragically not on the candidates. CRs who believe in the CRNC and are thankful for what it has accomplished and stands for are in support of Gourley. Those CRs who have lost a miniscule Chapter–level race and blamed CR petty CR politics support Davidson. They are the conspiracy-theorists, the LI-described closet cases.

What is truly “dismal” is CRvets claim that the Coulter endorsement was “utterly fictitious”. It appears that the CRvets are utterly ridiculous.
The fact is she said “of course I endorse him.” I realize this may have been misinterpreted, but it is no fault of the Davidson campaign for publicizing the fact that she had such high praise of him, which happened to include the phrase “OF COURSE I ENDORSE HIM.”

I am trying to decide how to say this, but the people on this blog have exposed their names to the public and those who are attacking them haven’t. That, in and of itself, is all you need to know. I agree with his assesment of the crnc race, I want Davidson to win, I want people who support Davidson to win at the state level as that will facilitate a Davidson victory. However, I have seen the crnc establishment oppose people at the statewide level who have opposed them. If he wants to put his name to it, good, more power to him. But does it advance the cause of getting Davidson elected if a candidate is recruited to beat Joe, simply because he spoke out? I don’t think it does. That’s just my opinion, but I don’t think it warrants calling me an “ass clown,”

If you knew your CRNC history this is not even close to the largest scandal. Karl Rove’s election, Jack Abramoff and Grover Norquist promised political favors in return for votes (currently under DOJ investigation for something else), Ralph Reid jailed on DUI and the late 80’s when the CRNC did little to nothing but spend RNC money. This would have been a non-story if opportunistic CR’s would have quietly taken this issue up with the chairman instead of with the media. Guess what I’m in the beltway and nobody knows about “the biggest scandal in CRNC history”. “The greatest generation” was refunded their money. This is an issue for political gain.

Good point Mark. Sam, obviously, doesn’t have any idea as to CRNC history. If he did he would know that none of the scandals he mentioned were as sustained in the press as the fundraising scandal, not even the sexual harrassment scandal. The seniors were not refunded, there is no disputing that. If you look through the IRS filings you would see that if the CRNC refunded each senior that Hoplin/Gourley scammed they would have to close the doors of the CRNC. How will Gourley fund a youth movement when he only has ever collected a check from the CRNC not collected checks for the CRNC? Without RDI there is no way he can do it.

Any one on this blog who has called Michael a liar clearly has no idea about this race or of the previously mentioned candidate. I am not someone who has any vested interest in this race, however when out of curiosity I looked in on this mean spirited banter I felt compelled to stand up and do the right thing. Davidson is no way a liar, I have never met an individual with higher ideals. The Ann Coulter endorsement was crystal clear, I was listening to her as she said it on the radio. It is so very disappointing how you gentlemen are lunging at each others throats to tear these candidates and each other to pieces. You are not behaving as I would expect the Republican men who I pride myself on being acquainted with. Michael Davidson is a truthful and hardworking man who I am proud to have as a fellow member of this party. Michael is a man who is honest in all of his dealings and would never post such derogatory statements (as posted above) about homosexuals, let alone even think them. Let’s not stoop to the levels of the liberals who oppose us and strive to tear our party apart. Both men in this race deserve success and are incredibly talented, whichever way the election goes the organization will not crumble. To reiterate: Davidson is in no way and never has been a liar, he in everyway lives up the high ideals of our great party.
