Ciao, Roma

Self-proclaimed Thatcherite and Friend of America, Silvio Berlusconi, is in Trouble. I have personally long been hopeful that his coalition would last and he would become the first Italian Prime Minister to serve out a full term. All in all, he has succeeded at becoming the longest serving head of state in Italy since Mussolini, but the chances of surviving until next year have dimmed, and for reasons I never would have expected. I am literally shocked that Rocco Butiglione, perhaps Europe’s bravest politician, has basically pulled the plug on everything and effectively handed the country over to Romano Prodi and the EU-nistas and communists.

Why care? Good question. The fact of the matter is that not only would the U.S. lose a vital ally in the War on Terror (echoes of Spain last year), but more importantly Italy is the last country in Europe that has a conservative movement alligning even somewhat closely with the American Right on issues of morality and social values. Losing that to the ever encroaching forces of the post-human EU is Not a Good Thing.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Burlusconi as he seemed to me to have some charachter issues but he’s as good as they get on the continent. All these countries need their Ronald Reagan’s to rise up and overthrow the welfare state stuff that is just killing these countries, and if not I fear we will see a real disaster in Europe. I am talking revolutions, riots, and the most likely Muslim uprisings.

I like Burlusconi for purely selfish, nationalistic reasons. He is a thoroughly corrupt politician heavily in the pocket of the Sicilian and Neapolitan mafia. Now that being said, he is the better guy for the United States of America to have in power in Italy than some neo-communist who will get his rocks off trying to out-left the French. We can’t pick and choose who rules other sovereign nations, but we can silently support the lesser of two evils (which is usually the only choice you have anyway). Let’s not pretend that Silvio is a saint under attack by the hard left. He is a shady operator under attack by the hard left. The UDC, I imagine, has had enough of the endless corruption that has taken place under his rule.

I do read the Economist, but they get political issues wrong. I like their economic analysis though.
