For Those Conservatives Who Need Reminding…
Written by Mark Harris on April 26th, 2005NOTE: Casey is running against Santorum and polls have him beating Rick by 14 pts. Rick may not be perfect but he’s the best ally we have on many social issues, so let’s make sure he stays in the Senate.

I always appreciate the strong stances the senator takes on issues such as abortion and gay marriage. He’s demonized by the left for it, but he is exactly dead-on right on those issues. If people knew his personal story, they might change their outlook on him.

Well he made his bed with Specter, now let him sleep in it. At this point I don’t care whether he wins or loses. I know he was a great senator for a long time, but he dropped the ball recently.

I think it was a politically smart move. While Toomey certainly was the better Republican, Specter was the smarter choice. Specter was going to win the general election regardless. It would have been more iffy with Toomey and he probably would have lost since the state went for Kerry. Santorum campaigning for Specter was politically smart for two reasons. 1) He had the better chance of winning and maintain/increase the Republican majority. 2)A moderate Republican on the ballot at the same time Bush was on the ballot was seen as a better way Bush could carry PA. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Don’t get me wrong. Specter sells out to the Dems too much and is a horrible choice for Judiciary Committee chairman, but if I had to choose between a Democrat or a moderate Republican, I’d go for the Republican. As much as I would have liked to see it, I don’t think Toomey would have won.

That is no choice at all IMO and runs counter to the stated aims of this blog. I would rather maintain the integrity of the party than vote for a slack Republican like Specter. If I were a PA resident I would have a hard time voting for Rick. The logic that “Toomey would never have been elected anyway” is a self-defeating prophecy that the Rockefeller wing of the party has used endlessly against true conservatives in the primaries. Hell Rick got elected didn’t he, why not Toomey?

Amen Mike Amen! Peter go re-reead the stuff written on the race, Pat would have beat Hoeffel, and Specter does more dammage than any democrat to our cause.

For the record and I dont think you meant this, but I certainly am not from the Rockefeller wing of the party. I just think Santorum campaigned for Specter because he saw it as a better alternative politically than bucking his state’s senior senator and going for the conservative challenger.

I didn’t think you were a rockefeller or a RINO, and I know why Santorum did it, but his reasoning lacked conviction and guts. Imagine if the party had made a judgement call like that about him when he first ran, there would be no Rick Santorum. He of all people should know the value of belief. The party let down the people of PA and Rick Santorum sold out for politics. I wish it wasn’t so, but there it is.

It is time for all of us to remember the ANGER that we felt at Rick about a year ago, and keep that fresh. Immediately after Toomey lost, I vowed not to vote for President Bush, or any hack Republican ever again. Events transpired, and I pulled the lever for W eventually, but I’ve never felt so dirty.
My understanding, aka what Mark told me, is that Bob Casey Jr. may or may not be reliably pro-life, at least not as strong as his father.

And does his being pro-life mean he’ll be on our side on the filibuster fight? Harry Reid is pro-life and he certainly not on our side.

Harry Reid is “pro-life”. I didn’t see him involved in the Democrats for Life 95-10 proposal, which ought to be ‘blogged on.
