In the comments section of the post on Dino Rossi’s apparent refusal to run for US Senate, Michael made a reference to a bill to split the state in two. It turns out that there is such a measure in the WA Senate. The “alternative” media in Seattle has come out in favor of the measure saying, literally, “cut the rubes loose”.

Here’s the thing: It ain’t gonna happen. And if it did, would it be a good thing? We might get two solid conservatives from Eastern Washington, but the conservatism of a population is not an absolute indicator of the philosophy of who they elect (Chuckles Hagel). As “The Stranger” gloats, the western part of the state would without a doubt produce two Barbara Boxers. No chance of a moderate Diane Feinstein from them. Do we really want Sen. Baghdad Jim?

In the final analysis, I would say we have a greater likelihood of Alberta, Puerto Rico, and Washington, DC becoming states (in that order) than this state-splitting proposal going anywhere.

There’s always talk of something like this happening. It won’t though. It would take the Westside of the state to actually care about the eastside … not gonna happen.

The real push out here is to split liberal King County into two (or three) counties. After the Seattle liberals pushed through the Growth Management Act, the rest of the county is up in arms. The chances of that happening arent very good either, but much better than the state splitting in two.

Well, I remember a few years ago when the Valley waned to split off from Los Angeles so they could stop paying for the train wreck. The only problem was, the referenda was open to the whole city, so it failed.

What’s with the Pacific Northwest and growth management? Portland being the worst example. Here in the Northeast we just wish we had growth to manage.

Environmentalism is like a religion for most liberals out here. The GMA is scripture - the Constitution and private property be damned. The real problem is you have the liberal epicenter of Seattle surrounded by otherwise fairly conservative areas, and all contained in one county. So liberals in Seattle who’ve screwed up everything around them can dictate how these areas develop.

Interesting comment about Alberta Andrew, have you been following that as well? Personally nothing gets me as excited as the idea of having conservative, rich Alberta as the 51st state. Either that or a woman.
