When a mosque isn’t a mosque

Friday, May 6th, 2005

Well, this is a bit random, but I thought it was interesting that everyone mentioned how Pope JPII was the first pope to ever pray in a mosque. While doing some research on an unrelated matter, it turns out that this “mosque” wasn’t exactly always a mosque:

“[T]he standard bearers of conservative Islam attacked the pope for his insistence on praying at the tomb of St. John the Baptist, which lies beneath the pillar of the mosque. Leading imams feared it was a wily first step to re-Christianize the mosque, which was a Christian church until the 8th century.”

Let’s hope that Coaltion forces have a bit more tact and don’t turn the the Najaf mosque housing Husayn’s remains into a church…or worse…a Wal-Mart.

Meet Chuck Pennacchio

Friday, May 6th, 2005

Apparently this guy didn’t get the memo about Bob Casey, Jr being the annointed Democrat candidate for PA Senate. Mr Pennacchio’s task is sisyphean at best, but this liberal ‘blog makes the point that the Alyson Schwartz wing of the PA Democrat party, which needs to write the checks, just isn’t ready to swallow Casey.

I’ll defer to Mark, as in all matters of PA politics.

The Gentleman from Searchlight Momentarily Loses Sanity

I was glad to see Harry Reid quickly backtracked from his choice words about President Bush. I guess his anger vanished as quickly as his pro-life credentials. I think the White House response was dead on, the Democrats lack originality and most importantly optimism. We can expect to see tantrums like this in the future, I’m looking forward to Hillary’s.

Speaking of tantrums, what’s Howard Dean up to? I see quotes in the media from Ken Mehlman all the time, and none from the Vermonster. He must be out with his followers looking for a good recipe for vegan lasagna.
