Supreme Court Russian Roulette

SCOTUS

Drudge is reporting that the White House is preparing for two vacancies on the SCOTUS.

The hysteria surrounding this is somewhat like that associated with conspiracy theories about rebuilding the Temple of Solomon, but eventually someone (maybe even this President) will be in a position to name a Supreme Court Justice. I’m not really looking forward to it for two reasons: One, I hate watching cable news talk shows and I don’t want to feel enticed to do so. Two, I hold the belief that the White House will nominate terrible justices.

What a non-story. I agree with the distrust in Bush’s abilities to pick judges, but does anyone think for a second they don’t have a list of at least a half-dozen possible nominees? Who do I figure they have on it?
    1. Al Gonzalez
    2. Priscilla Owen
    3. Ted Olson
    4. Mitch McConnell (if we’re lucky)
    5. and 6. are other judges from Texas

I think we have a 50/50 chance Bush will either give us a quality justice or a terrible justice. I wouldn’t bet on Gonzalez being the first one to be appointed though maybe not even the second. He just got a new job.

Yeah, no offense Stephen but I totally disagree that Gonzales will be nominated. You don’t make someone AG as a stepping stone to SCOTUS, especially after his “torture-memos”.

Anyway, sports fans: THIS IS IT! This is everything. Everything we fight for, every election, will be for nought if we don’t tip the Supreme Court. Nixon and Reagan and Bush I had the excuse of dealing with Democratic Senates. If we can’t get solid Constitutionalists on the bench with Dubya and 55 Republicans, then it’s time for a revolt.

Anyway, I”m glad to hear they’re thinking two, but let’s all pray for 3. That is after all the magic number.

If we’re lucky maybe Ruth Bader Ginsburg will return to her home galaxy.

You’ve got a legitimate point about the torture memos, but the way he could respond is that he was acting as an extension of the administration and working to further its policies. I just get the feeling that W will go to the Bushies, for a minority, preferably a woman. Gonzalez fits the bill (except for the woman part.)

He also thinks that the Constitution is a “living document”.

They need to push Clarence Thomas up to Chief Justice, and then plug in a couple of low-profile, hardcore conservatives to the bench that the Democrats will have a tough time blocking.

How about we send Bork up again?

Unfortunately, Judge Bork is too old. We need a couple of 25 year old Antonin Scalia. Most of all, we DON’T need Orrin Hatch.

That’s the result of Democrat filibusters: we’ve got no bench of 25 yr old Scalias.

K-Lo is reporting via Roll Call a Lott/Benator deal on judges. Read it here, and get SA’s thoughts here.

Anyone contemplated the possibility of the democrats filabustering on SC nominees–that’d make quite the showdown I believe.

Bryan, I think the administration will avoid that by nominating hack liberal justices. It’s legacy building time.

Andrew, I think you are right, but unlike Bush I, this Bush will have to face us. The people are informed in 2005, this ain’t the pre-internet age.

The article said they are preparing for the end of this term. When does the Supreme Court’s current term end?

Also, I am not an expert on the judges that Bush has appointed so far as President but arn’t most of them fairly conservative, or are the only conservatives the ones that the dems are filibustering?
