Sen. Lincoln Chafee (RINO-RI) was endorsed by the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) (with the new very Orwellian name, Pro-Choice America). For those of you who haven’t been following the race, conservative Republican mayor of Cranston Stephen Laffey is considering primarying Chafee.
Club for Growth Executive Director noted:
David Keating, executive director of the Club for Growth, a conservative organization that has bankrolled races against moderate Republicans, said the Chafee race “is definitely on our radar.”
Keating’s group has not formally studied Laffey’s record or backed any candidate, but he said Laffey seems in-line with his organization.
“From what we’ve heard . . . he’s willing to take on wasteful, entrenched interests that really have no concern for the local taxpayer,” Keating said.
Now of course the debate is not if Laffey would be better than Chafee, he most certainly would, but rather could Laffey win a general election in Rhode Island. A few months ago I would have said no way, BUT the Democrats have failed to recruit a strong challenger into the race with both Congressmen bowing out of the race. (Supposedly pro-life Democrat Jim Langevin wanted the spot but the DSCC said “one pro-life candidate in a cycle - referring to Casey in PA - is enough”). This may just open the spot wide enough for Laffey to slip through, we’ll see.
