NARAL Endorses Chafee for His Re-Elect

Written by Mark Harris on May 21st, 2005

Sen. Lincoln Chafee (RINO-RI) was endorsed by the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) (with the new very Orwellian name, Pro-Choice America). For those of you who haven’t been following the race, conservative Republican mayor of Cranston Stephen Laffey is considering primarying Chafee.

Club for Growth Executive Director noted:

David Keating, executive director of the Club for Growth, a conservative organization that has bankrolled races against moderate Republicans, said the Chafee race “is definitely on our radar.”

Keating’s group has not formally studied Laffey’s record or backed any candidate, but he said Laffey seems in-line with his organization.

“From what we’ve heard . . . he’s willing to take on wasteful, entrenched interests that really have no concern for the local taxpayer,” Keating said.

Now of course the debate is not if Laffey would be better than Chafee, he most certainly would, but rather could Laffey win a general election in Rhode Island. A few months ago I would have said no way, BUT the Democrats have failed to recruit a strong challenger into the race with both Congressmen bowing out of the race. (Supposedly pro-life Democrat Jim Langevin wanted the spot but the DSCC said “one pro-life candidate in a cycle - referring to Casey in PA - is enough”). This may just open the spot wide enough for Laffey to slip through, we’ll see.

I still wonder how Lincoln Chafee can consider himself a Republican. He was the only Republican senator to vote against the authorization of force in Iraq, he has voted against Bush’s tax cuts, voted against banning partial birth abortion, voted against barring gays in the Boy Scouts, and voted for overseas military abortions. I propose a switch. Let’s get Ben Nelson (D-NE) to become a Republican and have Chafee show his true colors as a liberal Democrat. That way the balance stays the same. The media calls him “moderate” Republican. I call him a LIBERAL. He’s the most embarassing member of our party in the Senate. If Langevin ran and won, at least another pro-lifer would be added to the Senate.

Yeah well let’s hope Laffey jumps in.

That would be good. Since getting the NARAL endoresment, Chafee has basicallly been able to ensure no prominent Democrat will jump in the race. If Laffey jumps in and beats Chafee in the primary (even though the NRSC is doing its best to support Chafee) that would be the perfect opportunity for Laffey to win in the general election against some unknown Democrat.

My understanding is that he still considers himself a Republican because his father was.

Yeah, and that is the only thing that is keeping him a Republican. His father, John Chafee, was a popular governor and senator (was in the GOP leadership) from RI and when he died, the governor of RI appointed him to fill his father’s vacant seat.

Well, as will irk all of you, Chaffee is going to get the full support of every Republican member of the Senate, and the White House, and Laffey is not going to run. Most likely because he is going to chose to run for Lieutenant Governor with the Party endorsement. It’s a clue that those in Rhode Island, remember the 11th commandment.
