Next Majority Leader?

Written by Nate on May 31st, 2005

An up coming battle that all conservatives should follow will be over who will take over Frist’s position as Senate Majority Leader when he steps down. I have heard that Sen. Lott wants the job again. That would be the worst possible outcome. I would love to see Coburn get it, but he is still a freshman and is hated by the establishment. Any other ideas?

Mitch McConnell is next in line and most likely to get it in my book. If Rick Santorum can manage to get re-elected he might make a run too. The Republicans won’t go back to Lott.

I think I prefer McConnell, he’s not flashy, but he’s a reliable conservative. Santorum ticked me off back during the Toomey/Specter primary.

McConnell has been trying to persuade Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison to run for re-election stating that she would have a more prominent leadership role in the Senate GOP in the next Congress. Should Santorum lose, Hutchison could very well become the GOP Whip. That would leave a number of leadership spots open. Norm Coleman very much wants to be in the leadership so I expect he might run for something. However, he’s up in a presidential election year and with MN politics, that could be tough for him and he may need to spend his time campaigning and making the case for his re-election.

Mitch moves up to Majority leader, Santorum moves up to whip, Jon Kyl moves up to Santorum’s spot.

The Washington Prowler has a story on Lott & Frist. It’s worth reading.

Shipwrecked, that is a very interesting article. It just confirms what I believed before, that we need to clean house and get rid of incompetent “leaders” who are selling us out.

Be that as it may, Senate leadership is a tough deal. You just don’t have much to leverage people with. (Although Frist has evidently picked up some power on dealing out committee assignments, which I wasn’t aware of till recently.) Nonetheless, I remain skeptical that we will win till the populace agrees with us, which is why I love ISI’s fellowships. I think it was Trotsky who said you need to take the college campuses. We’re learning.
