Democracy Falling in Canada?

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

I hadn’t been paying much attention to the happenings of what has been going on in Canada, but the threat of the end to legitimate democratic operations is very real. A great post here sumarizes most of the issues. I will distill it as much as I can.
1. The Liberal Party, as the ruling party, appoints judges and thus has swung the judiciary squarely and almost entirely to its side
2. The passing of the “Charter of Rights and Freedoms” is a lefty style document of “inalienable rights” which of course are interpreted by the judiciary (See Point 1)
3. The media is entirely run by the government or a few small families that are all Liberal Party stalwarts.
4.. The newly reunited Conservative Party brought a motion to the floor of a vote of non-confidence
5. The Liberal Party refused to recognize the motion in direct defiance of the Canadian Constitution.

I will quote the Canadian blog as the writer is obviously much more powerful about it:

The country’s loyal opposition is the (fairly new and not terribly stable) Conservative party, (renamed after long long long process from Western separatist and various right wing and libertarian groups the history of which is too much for our purposes…) and last week, Stephen Harper brought such a motion to the floor…

and the Liberals refused to accept it.

What does that mean? It means that the ruling Liberals, faced with final and utter disgrace, have decided that they will not relinquish the power they have worked for decades to capture, even if it means exposing themselves to the world as the pack of gangsters they are.

So now, what’s a leader of the Opposition to do? The government has decided to throw off the pretense of a constitutional democracy and the rule of law and just keep being in power. If they won’t play by the rules, what’s next?

6.The only recourse the Opposition has even though the Government has clearly violated the LAW is to the Governor General, who happens also to be a Liberal Party stalwart.

I thought this kind of stuff only happened in third-world countries, I mean, this is happening all under our noses and none of us seem to care as the light of liberty is extinguished up north. All I have to say is we better learn our lesson, because don’t think this insanity won’t be imported down here. Luckily we still have guns.

This Sucks

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

This article is stupid. As if the liberals didn’t call the shots before yesterday. I had a lot to say about it, but I can hardly begin to care anymore.

Stem Cell Vote Roll Call

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Here is the roll call for the House vote today on embryonic stem cell research. I am not going to explain why this is a bad bill, there are already gigs of text written on that.

50 “Republicans” voted for the bill including Kirk (R-Alex’s District). Only 12 brave Democrats crossed over. They deserve praise for their stand, knowing that the vote would be lost anyway. One name that sticks out is Rohrabacher (R-California) who voted with the Democrats. I was under the impression he was a conservative, I guess I was wrong.

None of this is really an issue since Bush has promised a veto.

Sen. Vader McCain

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

How in the world did seven Senators cut the legs out from under the Senate leadership and the administration? This is nothing less than treason. What I can’t stand is now the press is hailing Sen. McCain and his band of traitors as Heroes. This political struggle between the two parties has been turned into an early battle over the Republican presidential primary and Sen. McCain thinks he has gotten away with it. Sen. Frist and the rest of majority should tell McCain to jump in the lake and go through with the vote.

Brownback on “The Deal”

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

John Hawkins over at Right Wing News has interviewed Senator Brownback (R-Kansas) regarding the deal that was cut to avoid the Senate rule change that was almost put into effect. Well worth a read.

State of the Party

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

The Chicago Boyz have an interesting post up regarding the GOP and its complacency. The main reason to read is to observe the GOP’s abandoned principles list originally posted on Ballon Juice.

I don’t agree with every point they try to make, but it is insightful to observe how others have noticed the drift that we have.

More Newsweek

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Newsweek flag
I saw this yesterday at Little Green Footballs, but didn’t have time to comment on it.

Well now Roger Kimball at the New Criterion Magazine blog, called Armavirumque has offered his commentary. This is well worth reading and much better than I would have done if I had tried and rushed it yesterday.

This scandal should be just as big as the Koran Flush story IMO. I liken this to Yasser Arafat in his prime, telling the western media in English of the need for peaceful dialogue with Israel and then turning around and in Arabic screaming to the masses about the need to sweep the Jewish dogs into the sea. Newsweek is doing the same thing here (though I imagine with different editorial staffs). They tell their American readers one thing, but to the world they need make no secret of how much they despise their own country.

UPDATE: Little Green Footballs has more Newsweek commentary here, here and here.

A Message From the Ghost of General Patton

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Some of you know how much I love General Patton. He is my All-American hero and a true role model for selfless patriotism. Jeff Quinton at Backcountry Conservative has a great link to a message from the ghost of General Patton. Enjoy.

“The Deal”

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

So what should we do now? If I were Bill Frist (and through the Grace of Almighty God I am not that spineless excuse for a man), I would force a vote on Saad and the others that have been thrown overboard by this deal. Let these GOP traitors explain to their constituents why they are voting against the president’s nominees on the floor of the Senate. This deal is only binding to the 7 jackasses involved in it, not the rest of the Senate GOP. Force the issue; force a filibuster on Saad. Nothing has changed here, and despite the best efforts of these radicals to snuff the will of the people, a strong Senate leadership can bring all of these judges to the floor for a vote.

Bring out the cots Bill, it’s time to go to the mattresses.

Coming December 9th, it looks cool.

We’re $%^@ed

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Ben Nelson is the man, but whatever this “deal” is, conservatives will get screwed in the end. Does anyone think there’s a guarantee Barbara Boxer et alia won’t go off the reservation and filibuster SCOTUS nominees despite this? I mean, what are “extraordinary circumstances” anyway?

UPDATE

The Deal has been clarified a bit. We’ll get up and down votes on the three most important nominees: Clark, Brown, and Pryor. I remain skeptical that The Deal will be helpful for future nominees, the Democrats have a funny idea of what constitutes aforementioned “extreme circumstances”.

Huckabee to Run in 2008?

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

According to the Huckabee 2008 blog, Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is planning a White House run. Huckabee, a former Baptist preacher, is wildly popular among several corners of the conservative movement and according to the article in the local paper might stand a shot in 2008 as a dark horse.

My thoughts are that he’s too far left on immigration, which I think will be a key issue of the ‘08 primary to stand much of a chance plus coming from Arkansas won’t help him much either. Most recently he’s supported the moderate running to replace him in the primary instead of the conservative candidate and stood up for more squishy pro-illegal immigration positions. Well that’s my two cents, post yours.

Atheist Week in San Fransisco, I’m SHOCKED

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Atheists are tired of being pushed around, apparently, and now want to do “evangelism” to make non-believers more militant in their atheistic stand point. Wow. The SF Chronicle carries the story here.

It’s common to find atheists in such causes as abortion rights and the environmental movements, but they’re not used to advocating for godlessness, said David Fitzgerald, a San Franciscan who will present his multimedia “The 10,000 Christs and the Evaporating Jesus” after the movie.

And they wonder why no one goes to church…

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Atheist minister re-admitted to church.

I wonder if Schroeder wishes he had joined the coalition after this.

Follow Up on Yuan Revaluation

Sunday, May 22nd, 2005

I posted some commentary on Olin Wethington being named Washington’s new “currency envoy” a couple of days ago. My basic point was that the Bush administration has no idea what it is doing or why it is even pushing for a revaluation in the first place. Now it seems that Alan Greenspan agrees with me.

American shoppers will pay higher prices but the U.S. trade deficit with the rest of the world won’t fall if China revalues its yuan currency as the Bush administration wants, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said on Friday.

Answering questions after addressing the Economic Club of New York, Greenspan said there was little doubt China will let its yuan currency appreciate against the dollar since it is also under internal pressure to do so.

Which is basically, exactly what I said. So even though the White House might be ignoring Save the GOP, it will probably listen to Big Al.

Watch the Implosion

Saturday, May 21st, 2005

Want to watch the implosion of an internet giant? Checkout the chaos over at MeetUp.com. They have instituted a $19 fee for “organizers” of the event. This has set out near chaos at what once seemed like a fantastic operation. TownHall.com is leaving MeetUp and many events have been cancelled due to the new fees. I really think this move will go down as one of the stupidest business decisions ever, because now everyone will be going elsewhere and the market for another free MeetUP like system will explode.

Get your popcorn should be a fun show.

More on the abort the troops Mike Crook

Saturday, May 21st, 2005

The appropriately named, Mike Crook, runs this idiotic website (Warning may be offensive to those with loved ones overseas).
From his “Forsake the Troops Site”

Our underlying problem is this: the military is a lifestyle these morons chose. What idiot risks their life for a country? It’s what they chose. Hopefully, they knew in their hearts this is abusing taxpayers’ money, and they enlisted anyway. So…Forsake our Troops! Let ‘em die in combat– we don’t need their ilk in this country!

U.S. Soldier= Poster child for retroactive abortion

The irony in this is that these men die so that Crook boy can write this filth, sadly I doubt he’ll ever realize that. The good thing is that he was on Hannity & Colmes and was absolutely eviscerated by both of them (Colmes is a good guy, just a bit misguided). The more the media puts these kind of idiots on TV the more conservatives gain. I hope he realizes his antics help get pro-military people elected, ironic twist of fate, ain’t it.

UPDATE: Actually Crook is no liberal by any stretch of the imagination I wound describe him more as an anarchist/libertine. Everyone do what’s best for themselves and screw everyone elese, basically a type of sociopath.

NARAL Endorses Chafee for His Re-Elect

Saturday, May 21st, 2005

Sen. Lincoln Chafee (RINO-RI) was endorsed by the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) (with the new very Orwellian name, Pro-Choice America). For those of you who haven’t been following the race, conservative Republican mayor of Cranston Stephen Laffey is considering primarying Chafee.

Club for Growth Executive Director noted:

David Keating, executive director of the Club for Growth, a conservative organization that has bankrolled races against moderate Republicans, said the Chafee race “is definitely on our radar.”

Keating’s group has not formally studied Laffey’s record or backed any candidate, but he said Laffey seems in-line with his organization.

“From what we’ve heard . . . he’s willing to take on wasteful, entrenched interests that really have no concern for the local taxpayer,” Keating said.

Now of course the debate is not if Laffey would be better than Chafee, he most certainly would, but rather could Laffey win a general election in Rhode Island. A few months ago I would have said no way, BUT the Democrats have failed to recruit a strong challenger into the race with both Congressmen bowing out of the race. (Supposedly pro-life Democrat Jim Langevin wanted the spot but the DSCC said “one pro-life candidate in a cycle - referring to Casey in PA - is enough”). This may just open the spot wide enough for Laffey to slip through, we’ll see.
