Islamic Government In Iraq
Written by Mark Harris on August 21st, 2005I found something on National Review that if true is going to result in me losing much sleep:
If this is true, that the US gov’t is pushing for an Islamic led government in Iraq, well then you can count me out of this escapade. I got on board and believe in this war on Iraq only if it in the long term secure our future, which this type of gov’t certainly won’t. I expect i will be flamed by Gary on this one, but if they did cross this bridge well Bush has done more harm to US national security in the long term that I dare even imagine. But first let’s see if it is true.

For what its worth, Afghanistan has traveled a similar path. (see the second to last section of this article in the Hoover Digest, which is right up there with First Things in quality.

Yeah, I don’t know. I am gettign very nervous about all this. If we “liberated” these countries just to turn them over to nuts again, then well Bush will be remembered as a total disaster. Though the jury is obviously still out, let’s all pray it isn’t the case.

I have to admit, I long ago came around to the PoV that the war wasn’t justified and was risky. If we come out with a friendly government - be it free or mildly oppressive - I’ll consider it a victory. The only thing I wouldn’t accept at this point is a hostile government, or Hitler/Stalin/Pol Pot-esque one. Benevolent dictatorship works for me at this point.

As usual Mark, you just assume the worst in the Bush administration. The government will, of course, have an Islamic character. It will not be Western style democracy. But it will be a free society that embraces Islamic values. To say that Bush is going to leave the country over to “nuts” is just absurd. The Bush Doctrine will do just the opposite, because the president recognizes that freedom - and not just stability - are the keys to our long-term security.
Please, you can’t be this fickle on these issues. I understand your concern with Bush on domestic matters, but it should have no bearing on his foreign policy. We need you to stay the course.
