Tom Coburn

Why I Love Tom Coburn, Part 2948597

From the Club for Growth blog:

Oh, but Dr. Coburn, you do have a way with words. These quotes from a recent townhall meeting in Oklahoma:

The U.S. government owes Enron executives an apology, U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., told members of the Oklahoma City Downtown Rotary Club on Tuesday.

“Because the accounting of the federal government is worse than anything Enron ever did,” said Coburn, who chairs a congressional subcommittee charged with examining government expenditures. …

“We found $100 billion worth of waste,” said Coburn. “I can document for you $100 billion in wasteful expenditures in 2004, right now.

“Before we had the hearings, I went to several of the auditing firms around the country and I asked them when you audit the firms, what do you allocate for an acceptable level of inappropriate payments?” said Coburn. “And every one of them - I didn’t tell them why I was asking - said zero. The goal of the federal government is 6 percent.” …

“We don’t have to raise taxes,” said Coburn. “What we have to do is become more efficient, eliminate duplication, eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse, and we can have the government we deserve instead of the one we’ve got.” …

And, looking through the old blog posts around here, I stumbled on a great quote about Coburn, here:

“[Coburn is] a principled, pompous member,” said a senior Republican staffer turned lobbyist. “He’s one of those ‘94 guys, and there were a certain percentage of them who were so anti-system that they don’t want to play the game. And from a leadership perspective and a lobbyist perspective, we don’t like those kind of people … He’s going to be a frickin’ nightmare in the Senate [if he wins].”

Right Wing Multi-Culturalism?

Friday, August 26th, 2005

RedState has what I consider a fantastic blog post here that is sure to ignite a SaveTheGOP civil war between myself and John, as we’ve had this fight before over the value of culture.

The rise of sheer rationalism and the death of tradition in the modern American conservative movement should be of the utmost concern to those of us claiming the movement conservative banner. What makes us love america should not neccesarily be her form of government, virtues, or vices rather it should be the bondings of home. Man is born with a feality to his locality that is something to be nurtured and preserved, but today is mocked, scorned, and cast as radical nationalism. I won’t add much more as the author of the RedState article hits the nail on the head. Read below the fold. Click to continue »

RINO Domination

Friday, August 26th, 2005

Check out the results of Patrick Ruffini’s poll, its RINO domination with Giulani winning 39 states. Allen picks up a few comming in second, followed by Newt in third, but no state wins, and then Brownback and Huckabee both pick up their own states. Mitt Romney wins out in Utah, but loses Massachusettes.

Also you can check out how our readers voted.

Our results: Allen, Brownback, Gingrich, Frist, McCain, Huckabee, Tancredo, Romeny. I am so proud of the fact that none of us voted for Rudy though on the fantasy ballot I loved to See Fred Thompson’s domination.

BTW, I voted Tancredo, Thompson.
