DeLay Gets Taxes Right

Written by YellowJacket on November 4th, 2005

Despite our dissappointment at TX Rep. Tom DeLay’s statements that there is “absolutely no fat left to cut in the federal budget” and other such nonsense, an article penned by the representative in the Washington post today concerning the tax reform panel’s recommendations to the president hit the nail on the head. Though unfortunately he does state that he would “support them on the floor of the House,” he also states his dissappointment with the suggestions and offers up two much better ideas: a flat income tax, or a sales tax (a la FairTax).

It’s nice to see Mr. DeLay get something right every now and then. Though Republican leaders in Congress often shy away from bold moves that would benefit all Americans (Social Security reform, Immigration reform, etc.), we can only hope that the sentiment expressed by Mr. DeLay is one harbored by many more House and Senate leaders. Maybe, just maybe, after months of The FairTax Book being on the NYT Bestseller list, along with citizens becoming more and more aware of the sham that is our tax code, some politicians will take notice and take action. It is absurd to think that reducing the tax brackets from 6 to 4, eliminating the marriage tax, decreasing the mortgage interest deduction, eliminating write-offs for state and local taxes, and a few other tweaks will fix the conundrum that is our tax code. Immediately after passage, interest groups would begin hounding Congress for this or that write-off or exception.

Please, Congressmen and women, listen to us for once: get rid of the flawed income tax system and eliminate special interests’ grip over your minds and our taxes.

H/T to RCP.
