Frist Ready to Block Filibuster

Sunday, December 11th, 2005

It’s nice to see the Republicans finally growing some gnads. Well, at least, talking like they have. Time will tell.

WASHINGTON - Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Sunday he is prepared to strip Democrats of their to ability to filibuster if they try to stall Samuel Alito’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

“The answer is yes,” Frist said when asked if he would act to change Senate procedures to restrict a Democratic filibuster. “Supreme Court justice nominees deserve an up-or-down vote, and it would be absolutely wrong to deny him that.”

In recent weeks, Senate Democrats have questioned whether Alito, a federal appeals court judge, has the proper judicial temperament and ideology to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

I know some people are concerned about the Republicans changing the Senate rules concerning judicial filibusters because it could some day backfire on us. I’m not all that worried about it. First of all, these haven’t always been the rules of the Senate. Second, even with the power I can’t recall the GOP using it anyway. If they weren’t going to filibuster Darth Vader Ginsburg, who are they going to use it on? Alito is an excellent choice and is in no way an extremist as many on the Left are trying to paint him. Bush did right on nominating him and he deserves to be confirmed.
