The Taliban, or nearly so

Arnold is not my favorite politician. No surprise I’m sure, but the man certainly has a set on him….sometimes. I thought this was great.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday told officials in his hometown in Austria to remove his name from a sports stadium and stop using his identity to promote the city. The governor’s request came after politicians in Graz began a petition drive to rename the stadium, reacting to Schwarzenegger’s decision last week to deny clemency to condemned inmate Stanley Tookie Williams. Opposition to the death penalty is strong in Austria.
In a letter that began “Dear Mister Mayor,” Schwarzenegger said he decided to spare the Graz city council “further concern” should he be forced to make other clemency decisions while he’s governor. Another inmate is scheduled to be executed in California Jan. 17.
“In all likelihood, during my term as governor, I will have to make similar and equally difficult decisions,” Schwarzenegger said in the letter. “To spare the responsible politicians of the city of Graz further concern, I withdraw from them as of this day the right to use my name in association with the Liebenauer Stadium.”
Sweet.
God, please tell me this isn’t the best we can do in ‘08.
WASHINGTON — Just four days after bowing out of a reelection campaign — and paving the way for a 2008 presidential run — Governor Mitt Romney yesterday drew his first rebuke from a White House rival.
Romney had been quoted as saying of Senator John McCain of Arizona: ”You know, John McCain, the other day, said that he thinks about being president every day in the shower. I guess I’d turn instead to the words of ‘Star Wars,’ which is it’s in a galaxy far, far away. Look, that’s down the road. It’s a lifetime away in the world of politics.”
When ABC’s George Stephanopoulos ran a tape of Romney’s comments on his show, ”This Week,” yesterday, McCain shot back: ”I’m glad that the governor is paying attention to the jokes that I tell on talk shows, but New Hampshire is not that far away from Massachusetts.”
When debating gay marriage, I often invoke the slippery slope argument. Not as a rhetorical tactic but because its true that once we give up on the man-woman marriage that everything will not only be legal but encouraged. Just check out this new “post-modern family”.
I could go on and on about how this type of thing shows how bad the situation will get unless we protect the traditional family, but we on the centre-right coalition also need to look at our libertine allies (not all libertarians are libertines, but all libertines and libertarians) and how they are encouraging this.
