Pelosi Wants Corruption Probe

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

Whoa! Things must be getting pretty serious on the Hill, Nancy wants the Congress to probe Republican malfeasance. “It’s hard for the American people to understand how corrupt it is here,” she says. She calls it “one of the most closed, corrupt congresses in history.” That is serious! The money quote from the article is this though:

“Pelosi’s letter did not ask the ethics committee to investigate an unrelated case involving Democratic Rep. William Jefferson of Louisiana.”

No…No, why would she? I mean, we’ve got people who ate at Jack Abramoff’s sushi restaurant! They ate for free!

For the good of both parties, and for the country, we need term limits about two decades ago.

Are You A Bigot? Presumption of Guilt Falls on Judge Alito

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

After watching the confirmation hearings of Judge Samuel Alito over the past three days, I am not surprised by the disgracefulness of the Democratic “questioning.” Nearly every Democratic senator worked from the premise, when questiong the judge, that he is racist, sexist and bigoted. They reflexively accepted the tired and completely unfounded stereotypes of conservatives: we are all greedy capitalists who are opposed to legal equality for women, homosexuals and minorities. At least six Democrats inquired about Alito’s membership in Concerned Alumni of Princeton (a university group opposed to coeducation and affirmative action and supportive of campus ROTC programs), desperately searching for any way to reveal Alito’s supposedly racist and bigoted beliefs.

In the liberal mindset, all conservatives are closet bigots. It doesn’t matter what the facts say. It is an inalienable tenet in the minds of leftist politicians. The burden of proof is always on conservatives to prove that they are indeed NOT racist and bigoted. This standard is not only applied to Supreme Court judicial nominees, but also to Republican politicians (Ex: Trent Lott had to show he was not a racist, but such a burden has never been placed on former Klan member, Democratic Senator Robert Byrd).

Senator Lindsey Graham exposed the disgraceful presumptiveness of the Democrats by asking this powerful question yesterday to Judge Alito: “Are you a closet bigot?” Alito: “No sir, I’m not any kind of a bigot.”

It was actually a friendly statement from Senator Graham, designed to expose the absurdity of the Democratic questioning. The exchange was astounding. I was not sure whether to laugh or to cry. Mrs. Alito chose the latter option, and I don’t blame her. Thankfully, we have alternative media on our side today to help dispel the liberal notions that conservatives are uncaring bigots. The liberal smears are not as damaging as they once were. Nominees like Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas were largely alone in countering the “he is a bigot” attack. But today, the situation is vastly different. We have the internet, Fox News, and talk radio on our side. It is partly for this reason that Judge Alito will enjoy easy confirmation next week.

DeLay Faces Primary Challengers

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

HOUSTON - U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, who lost his leadership post because of his ties to a disgraced lobbyist and faces felony charges in his home state, now has another worry: an unprecedented four-way primary for the seat he’s held comfortably for 22 years.

While two of DeLay’s challengers in the March 7 primary aren’t considered to have much credibility — one is making his fourth attempt to unseat DeLay and the other has lived overseas much of her adult life — lawyer Tom Campbell of Sugar Land holds an impressive Republican resume.

Campbell worked on the presidential campaigns of Bob Dole and the elder George Bush, whose administration appointed him general counsel to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A former Harris County Republican Party official runs Campbell’s campaign.

I have never heard of this Tom Campbell guy before so I don’t know exactly what kind of Republican he is. I have mixed feelings about DeLay. He was the one that left the Medicare bill open long enough to twist enough arms and push it through. It was also DeLay that made the ridiculous statement last year that they had cut all the spending they possibly could. (I still can’t believe he made that claim with a straight face) Additionally, I do believe DeLay is probably guilty of some kind of illegal doings arising from the allogations that have been made against him, but I reserve my judgment until he has his day in court.

The bottom line, DeLay has become a black eye on the GOP. It might do us good to lose him. On the other hand, if it is at the expense of someone “moderate” is it the right thing to do even it may be the ethical thing?

The American Spectator’s Jay Homnick has written up some very interesting recollections from Lucky Chuck’s distant past.

Institutional Problems in Iraq?

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

A senior British military officer serving in Iraq, Brigadier Nigel Aylwin-Foster, has published a stinging critique of the United States military in the U.S. Army publication. As one of the top British officers responsible for training Iraqi security forces the main target of his criticism is our army’s entire counter-insurgency ethos. I am looking forward to responses from officers and security experts in the U.S. Army. I would also caution against simply writing this guy off.

CRNC Website

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I was going around the blogospher and uncovered a link to the CD’s website. It is professional, it looks clean, and when you click around everything seems to work.

In contrast I present the CRNC website:
* Yes it is better than it was, but it stil is nto where a non-profit, membership based organization should be on the web.

For example look at this page. Looks ok, the page loads, it does break the borders, but oh well. Now click over to “Image 2″ and you’ll see what I mean. Its a common problem, and I know that the folks in CRNC HQ have better things to do then resize images, but this leads me to my next point…

I don’t mean this to come off as bashing the current CRNC administration, because, gasp (I am being nice to HoplinCo, shocking I know…), I think they are cashed strapped and understandably couldnt’ devote the resources neccesary to really building a true web presence.

As such I think that there are probably several CRs and CR alums out there, including myself, who could probably work together on trying to come up with something pro-bono that would better serve the CRs. Because, in reality, no matter on which side of the age-old CR fight you are on, the national image of the CRs is important to all of us and the web is an important component of that.

Just a late night thought.

Houston TV Stations Refuse Anti-Delay Ad

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

Here, I think, is the advertisement that Houston area television stations are reluctant to air, as reported by Yahoo! News. This is probably because they don’t want to run afoul of libel laws, or Russian oil tycoons for that matter.

A programming note, I watched the ad while listening to some dramatic tracks from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, and the effect was pretty sweet.
