Best Chapter of The Year

Friday, January 20th, 2006

The George Washington University College Republicans were officially recognized as “Best Chapter of the Year” last night in Washington, DC. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to the entire organization for a truly incredible semester. From extraordinary speakers - Sen. George Allen, Tom Coburn and Jack Kemp - to our commitment to grassroots activism, the GW College Republicans undoubtedly distinguished themselves among the nation’s nearly 1500 chapters.

In the spring, we will welcome Ann Coulter and Senator Sam Brownback to campus. This will be our best semester yet! I encourage all Savethegop readers to read more about our organization at our website: www.gwrepublicans.org

Where do we go from here?

Peggy Noonan opines on whats next for the GOP.

But where does this leave us? With our mass media busy with reluctant reformation . . . with the old network monopoly over and done . . . with something new, we know not what, about to take its place . . . with the Democratic Party adjusting to the loss of its megaphone . . . Where does that leave us? I think it leaves us knowing that, more than ever, the Republican Party–the party ultimately helped by the end of the old monopoly and the reformation of news media–must be a good party, a decent one, and help our country.

That it regain a sense of its historic mission. That it stop seeming the friend of the wired and return to being the great friend of Main Street, for Main Street still, in its own way, exists. That it return to basic principles on spending, regulation and state authority. That it question a foreign policy that often seems at once dreamy and aggressive, and question, too, an overreaching on immigration policy that seems composed in equal parts of naivetĂ© and cynicism. That its representatives admit that lunching with lobbyists is not the problem; failing to oppose the growth of government–so huge that no one, really no one, knows what is in its budget–is. That they reduce the size and power of government. That they help our country.

Well said. Read the whole thing.

The Shadegg Train Rolls On…

Friday, January 20th, 2006

Politics1:

HOUSE REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP. Despite last weekend’s claim by House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO) that he already has pledges for more than the 117 votes needed to win the race for House Majority Leader, rival candidate Congressman John Shadegg (R-AZ) is starting to gain some impressive endorsements this week. House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and House Republican Study Conference Chair Mike Pence (R-IN) endorsed Shadegg, as did some of the rising “Young Turks” in the GOP caucus. They seem drawn to Shadegg as an uncompromising Club for Growth-style voice for fiscal conservatism. Shadegg is counting on the secret ballot to enable him to win an upset victory over frontrunners Blunt and Congressman John Boehner (R-OH). No real gains this week touted by the Boehner camp.
