GOP, RINOs and Blacks

Written by Nate on February 3rd, 2006

Thomas Sowell wrote a great article highlighting the problems facing black republicans and conservatives in general, and no, it is not Democrats……it is yellow belly RINOs.

A promising new black political figure is emerging in Ohio — Ken Blackwell, a solid, pro-life conservative who has fought for lower taxes. He is seeking the Republican nomination for governor of Ohio and polls indicate that he has substantial support. Unfortunately, Ohio’s Republicans are a lot like Ohio’s Democrats — both are for higher taxes. On this and other issues, Blackwell is described in the current issue of City Journal as “often at war with his own party as well as the Democrats.”
“When Republicans from time to time try to reach out to blacks, they tend to do so ineptly, if not ridiculously. For reasons unknown, they seem to want to appeal to black voters in the same ways that Democrats appeal to black voters, by adopting a liberal stance. Why would anyone who wants liberalism go for a Republican imitation when they can get the real thing from Democrats? Republicans do not have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning the votes of liberal blacks.”

I am constantly astounded by people’s ingnorance in reaching out to typical Democratic blocs - i.e. blacks and Jews. Repeating the same line that Democrats do to try to win their favor (that line expressing the thought of, “They Think You’re Stupid” as Herman Cain would put it) is insulting and can hardly encourage any typical Dem voters to seriously consider another alternative.

Republicans need not be ashamed of where we stand. We oppose affirmative action not from some underlying racist tendency; rather it is exactly the opposite: we see it as reverse discrimination and, even worse, downright insulting to the merits of hardworking minorities. We shouldn’t be afraid to state proudly that we believe in people based on their merits, not on their skin color. I’ve always found it fascinating how people who talk non-stop all day about racism then turn around and try to give minorities a leg up, as if saying, “we know you can’t do it yourself so we’re going to help you.”

I am hearing impaired. Always have been. I have always been particularly angered not by people who found it necesary to bully me (I don’t consider those people worth wasting time or energy on), but by those who would try to treat me with kid gloves. I would expect that any self-respecting, hard working minority would be just as disgusted by the attitude so many liberal Democrats spew out.. sadly this is often not the case, as their “leaders” such as Julian Bond are sometimes the worst demagogues of all.

    Bring on more Bill Cosbys.

The most important thing that Republicans can do to attract minority voters is to emphasize the issues that really resonate with certain groups. During the 2004 election, a group of conservative Jews sprung up to support Bush based almost exclusively on the fact that he was the first American president to actively wage a war on terrorism and recognize it as an actual serious issue- something that Jews have dealt with for decades.

Also, minority communities are diverse. I think Herman talks about this in his book as well. How dare certain people claim to speak for an entire race or ethnicity! Republicans should never group people together and assume they have certain views (like Democrats do).
