‘97 Reasons Why Democrats Are Weak on Defense’

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

This is an excellent article detailing Democrats’ historical wrongheadedness in regards to national security. It is very thorough, going through many events in the Carter years that led to the Iran we see today, and the many times during the Clinton years when nothing was done in response to terrorist attacks against Americans.

This is a required reading assignment. Go read it.

How Capitalism Saved Amerca

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Thomas DiLorenzo, author of How Capitalism Saved Amerca and an economics professor at Loyola College in Maryland, will speak at Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday, October 4.

I am proud to call Hampden-Sydney my alma mater. Hampden-Sydney is not afraid to stand for tradition, and to buck the trend of liberal academia. As the 10th oldest college in the Union, Hampden-Sydney prides itself in turning good men into good citizens, that’s right; men. Hampden-Sydney is one of only 2 all-male colleges left in the country and proud of it.

So if you find yourself in middle Virginia next week stop in and grab some Hitchin’ Fries from The Hitchin’ Post and then head over to “The Hill” to revel in the joys of capitalism.

Club For Growth: 4 More House Endorsements

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

They’ve done it again. This morning the Club rolled out 4 more endorsements for the House of Representatives, including 1 incumbent and 3 candidates. The 4 endorsements are:

Representative Steve Chabot, OH-01, who is targeted by Democrats as a possible Dem pickup this fall
Ralph Norman, SC-05, challenging inclumbent Democrat Rep. John Spratt
David McSweeney, IL-08, a principled conservative whom this blog endorsed back before the primary
Michelle Bachmann, MN-06

These guys are on a roll. Let’s hope they can push a majority of their candidates through to victory this November. A Congress with more Club-backed Congressmen is exactly what we need.

Iraq President’s Letter to America

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Iraq’s new President, Jalal Talabani, wrote an open letter thanking America for her help liberating and protecting Iraq. The full letter can be found here. Here’s some parts I found to be important:

I want to be frank here. In order to rid Iraq of the constant threat of violence, we still need your help. As long as we are determent to outlast and outsmart our enemy, we shall reach our common goals. Iraq is slowly gaining the ability to fight this war with its own soldiers, evidenced recently by the relinquishing of complete control of coalition forces to the Iraqi government. The coalition now employs more soldiers from Iraq than any other nation.

Slowly but surely, Iraq will be able to protect itself on its own. The stakes of Iraq are enormous, world-shifting even. This is why our country should be a point of concern for every democratic country of the world.

I can assure you that the immediate departure of coalition forces would only unleash tensions between different communities; the prospect of a safe Iraq would be completely lost; and the previous descriptions of a civil war would seem insufficient and tame compared to the bloodshed of an Iraq that loses its international support. And although I cannot promise when or how the American presence will completely end in Iraq, I can promise that American soldiers do not fight in vain.

We in Iraq recognize that an incredible amount of American resources have been offered to us. And we understand that many Americans are frustrated with the course of the war, and we understand that doubt naturally coincides with difficulty.
[Emphasis mine]

H/T Gateway Pundit. As they note, the Washington Post didn’t find this letter to be newsworthy.

Dow Jones Industrial Breaks Record

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Guess the economy isn’t so bad after all… but hey, I guess Bush and Co. had to lower gas prices and manipulate the stock market right before elections - because we all know they have that kind of power. Right, Kos?

NEW YORK (AP) - The Dow Jones industrial average topped its record-high close this morning, reaching a milestone in Wall Street’s recovery from nearly seven years of corporate upheaval, economic recession and the impact of terrorism. The high close was 11,722.98 set on Jan. 14, 2000.

Lifted by growing optimism about stable interest rates and a soft landing for the economy, the Dow rose to 11,724.86 in morning trading, before slipping back to 11,699.08. It faced one more milestone, its intraday high of 11,750.28, before it could move into uncharted territory.

Good Move or Oof Dah?

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

Sources claim the GOP will be holding its 2008 convention in the Twin Cities. Two years ago I would have said this sounds like a great idea, the upper midwest was the new south after all. Now? Who knows. I hope this news gets people out to vote for Kennedy (the good one) and Pawlenty though.

CNN Political Ticker

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

CNN has a new feature, the CNN Political Ticker. I’ve found it to be pretty useful lately, though it does tend to join the growing echo chamber of similar sites that all report a great deal of the same material. However, it is nice to see links from actual AP stories and such. The CNN Political Ticker should join the RCP Blog and Politics1 in everyone’s daily political run-down.

Because sometimes you just can’t get enough of the catfighting between Sen. George Allen and Jim Webb. ;)

Pittsburgh Tribune Review Cites SaveTheGOP

I have been traveling so much from work that it appears I missed this in the Trib’s Sunday paper on the 17th. Someone at work mentioned to me that the Trib had mentioned a post I made on the site here on their “Best of the Blogs” article:

More on the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy

Monday, September 25th, 2006

If you’ve paid attention to the blogosphere lately (if not read my post below and follow the link to Hot Air), you know that former President Clinton got very aggresive with interviewer Chris Wallace on FOX News Sunday regarding his actions while in office to go after al Qaida and Osama bin Laden. Amidst his inappropriate hand gesturing and emotional insistence that Wallace, FOX (isn’t Rupert Murdoch supporting Hillary Clinton? Or is that just part of the “conspiracy”?), and ABC are all out to get Clinton as part of the conservative right wing, Clinton maintained that conservatives were being hypocritical because the same voices who question his administration’s actions while in office for eight years supposedly were against Clinton’s actions against al Qaida when he was in office and claimed that he “spent too much time on bin Laden.”

These assertions by Clinton simply aren’t true. The Corner at NRO has a good round-up of repeated support from Republican leaders for President Clinton’s anti-al Qaida actions. Go there and scroll down a while, see what goodies you can find.

Bill Clinton: Ungentlemanly and Inappropriate

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Today on FOX News Sunday interviewer Chris Wallace was exposed to some rather un-Presidential behavior from former President Bill Clinton. Christopher Wallace, who simply asked Clinton about his administration’s actions to capture bin Laden, was then cut off and interrupted repeatedly by an emotional Clinton who inappropriately repeatedly jabbed his finger in Wallace’s face and Wallace’s notes. Clinton, sounding more like his wife with her “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” jibber-jabber, then accused Wallace and the media of parroting right-wing talking points against Clinton. If you recall, the “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” wasn’t a conspiracy at all- appropriate questions were asked, the President dishonored his office by lying under oath to the American people, and he became the first elected President to be impeached by the House of Representatives.

It’s too bad former President Clinton had to sink to former President Carter’s level and act immature and unbecoming of a President. However wrong he may have been, he’s always maintained a respectable demeanor and has never displayed such a sophomoric attitude. Mr. President, please grow up and learn how to conduct yourself in a gentlemanly fashion in an interview.

Just a note on the Tech game last night. The College Republicans were out in force. Sonny Perdue signs were prominently displayed everywhere. We sat near the student section and most had Jackets for Sonny Stickers. Sonny’s Democratic challenger Mark Taylor had no presence. Alex you should be proud.

GOP Governors Turning Liberal

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

The New York Times has an editorial highlighting the growing trend of GOP candidates campaigning on more liberal platforms in an attempt to be “more appealing to moderate voters.” I know I am an idealist, but I see campaigns as more than just winning elections, it is a battle and debate of ideas. I see the GOP trying to be all things to all people and it irks me. When you do that, you lose the heart and soul, the core of your values. If the GOP truly circled the wagons and embraced their inner core by promoting true conservative candidates, along with the basic principles of cutting taxes, small government, strong national defense, and promoting traditional values, I truly believe the GOP would be resoundingly successful. Reagan proved that this works, yet we see the GOP sell their selves short time and again. I am not saying the GOP would win every election, but it would help us get rid of some of these wimps that are not on our side anyway.

Looking Beyond the Constitution

Monday, September 18th, 2006

As yesterday was Constitution Day, where the Framers signed the document 219 years ago, The Evening Bulletin saw it fit to run my column challenging people to see a more holistic view of the document by examining the history that preceded it.

“Looking Beyond The Constitution.”

Excerpt:

“In 1824, Pennsylvania Judge Thomas Duncan upheld in an opinion that Christianity was part of the common law. His opinion is perhaps one of the most telling understandings of religious freedom in America, ‘Christianity, general Christianity, is and always has been a part of the common law of Pennsylvania; Christianity without the spiritual artillery of European countries; for this Christianity was one of the considerations of the royal charter, and the very basis of its great Founder, William Penn; not Christianity with an established church, and tithes and spiritual courts; but Christianity with liberty of conscience to all men.’”
