Sen Harry Reid used campaign funds for Christmas bonuses

Written by Benaiah on October 17th, 2006

What is it with Democrats and land deals?

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid paid cash for a $750,000 condo at the Ritz-Carlton where he lives. But when it comes to giving the doorman and other support staff Christmas bonuses, he’s been using campaign donations instead of his own money.

Federal election law bars candidates from converting political donations for personal use.

Questioned about the campaign expenditures by The Associated Press, Reid’s office said Monday his lawyers had approved them but he nonetheless was personally reimbursing his campaign for the $3,300 he had directed to the staff holiday fund at his residence.

This comes on the heels of a story on Senator Reid’s last week regarding his land dealings.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid announced Monday he is amending his ethics reports to Congress to more fully account for a land deal that allowed him to collect $1.1 million for property he hadn’t personally owned for three years.

Will the Democrats reign in their own? Doubtful. He will probably get 3 standing ovations if he is forced into an ethics hearing.

Wow, tipping the doorman is totally the same level of scandal as Foley’s pedophilia. Way to deflect criticism from your own party.

Using your position of political power to commit unethical acts is wrong. This applies to either using campaign money for personal use, or for hitting on underage pages.

Nobody’s deflecting here. Heaven forbid we cover Reid in 1 post compared to the multiple scathing posts we’ve done on the Foley matter.

Way to deflect criticism yourself David.

I worry about the precedent Republicans are setting with the Christmas bonus issue. The fact of the matter is, campaign finance laws _do not_ and _can not_ start telling campaigns who they can and cannot put on their payroll.

This entire situation is John McCain’s fault. The entire group supporting him for president must be tone-deaf to the obstruction of free speech that the BCRA represents. Have these people even looked at what McCain’s law says??

David this blog is dedicated to calling a spade a spade. Take some time to read a little bit and you will know. Wrong is wrong regardless of the party.
