Written by Sam on October 27th, 2006Apparently, Jim Webb, Democrat Senate candidate running against George Allen, writes novels that describe in quite a bit of detail sexual acts involving underage children.

– Lost Soldiers: “A shirtless man walked toward them along a mud pathway. His muscles were young and hard, but his face was devastated with wrinkles. His eyes were so red that they appeared to be burned by fire. A naked boy ran happily toward him from a little plot of dirt. The man grabbed his young son in his arms, turned him upside down, and put the boy’s penis in his mouth.”
This is very disturbing, to say the least, and you wonder what goes through the head of someone who would write something like this. Here is Mr. Webb’s defense:
He defended his fiction as “illuminative.”
“It’s not a sexual act,” Webb told Plotkin regarding the “Lost Soldiers” excerpt. “I actually saw this happen in a slum in Bangkok when I was there as a journalist.”
“The duty of a writer is to illuminate his surroundings,” he added.
Coincidentally, a Cambodian woman in Las Vegas is facing sexual assault charges for performing a similar act on her young son, according to an Oct. 14 report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
I think we can move Virginia out of leans Republican, to safe Republican.

I’m uncomfortable with this attack. If he is describing an event that actually happened then it makes no sense to use it against him, he was really just doing his job as a writer. Just because the reality that he had to describe is indicative of the brokenness of mankind doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t write about it. From what I can tell Webb was not glorifying paedophilia, as many on the left do.
That being said, this attack will be devastating to Webb.

The attack is unfair because even though his novels are full of wild stuff it is FICTION. People will respond to the ads by Allen because they won’t take the time to actually research what Webb wrote in the context he wrote it. I hope Webb loses, but not because of this.

This is pretty low–can you imagine how absurd it would be for someone to attack Tom Wolfe for his fictional writings?
Not that Democratic tactics are any better, though.

If a Republican wrote those things, the drive by media would try to frame it as the end of the world for them. Bill O’Reilly was much, much, much more tame in his book, and he got hammered. Serial hypocrites are everywhere to be found in the media.
And, I want nothing else to do with this discussion. I’m too lazy to research what Webb said in these books. Have fun debating.
