Midterm Elections OPEN THREAD
Written by YellowJacket on November 7th, 2006Comment away… I know I’ll be up all night.
[7:06 p.m.] We will have results soon from Georgia, Virginia, Indiana, and several other states.
UPDATE: Of course we’ll also be keeping a close eye on Mark Harris’s race to win election to the Pennsylvania General Assembly in the 42nd district. Pennsylvania returns won’t be available until after 8, but this is the link for the PA General Assembly returns.
UPDATE: So far the calls have been made for Casey over Santorum, Brown over DeWine, Menendez over Kean, and for PA Gov. Rendell over Swann and Jodi Rell in CT. None of these calls are particularly surprising, the interesting calls (Virginia, Missouri, Maryland, Rhode Island, Connecticut Senate and Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Florida House seats) have yet to be made. Note: Obviously we’re not reporting on every election, only those of interest that are not giveaways. For example, the fact that Dick Lugar won reelection in Indiana is non-news.
UPDATE: Of course we know by now that Democrats have gained control of the House. Nancy Pelosi will now be third in line to the Presidency as Speaker of the House. Though all the networks called MD-Senate for Cardin long ago, with 48% reporting Steele is still ahead 50%-48%. VA-Senate is still uncertain with 98% reporting, and the Show Me State’s results are unknown at this time as well.
Though this is sobering news, allow me to point out a silver lining: there have been rumors around the Hill that should the Republicans lose the House, Pence and Shadegg would run for Minority Leader and Minority Whip, respectively. This could be the dawning of a new era of Republican re-discovery of their conservative principles. Only time will tell.
This thread will remain open because the control of the Senate is still unknown…. stay tuned…
UPDATE: Missouri is still too close to call, with Republicans privately expressing worry because St. Louis and Kansas City (liberal strongholds) have yet to be added to the tally. With 100% reporting Webb has the Virginia Senate race by less than 3,000 votes, or less than 1/10 of a percent - this will certainly go to a recount and absentee ballots are unknown, so this race isn’t over yet. Montana is still too close to call. Tennessee will probably go for Corker (Republican hold) but hasn’t been called yet.
UPDATE: The Senate race in Tennessee has been called for Bob Corker. Democrats must take the remaining seats, Montana, Missouri, and Virginia, in order to take control of the Senate.

8:45 PM
Early, early resutls from MI show Bouchard leading Stabenow 50% to 48% with the polls not closing until 9:00PM eastern time. Nice to see but meaningless at this point.
7
PM
8:47 PM
With 35% reporting Chris Chocola is down 43% to 57% in IN-2 not a good sign.
7
PM
I think we’re going to lose Chocola. Looks like the House is going to go Democratic at this point (in my extremely uneducated opinion).
7
PM
It’s been an hour, why won’t they post Mark’s results?!?! I’m pulling out my hair here! In fairness, I’m sure Mark and Alex are more nervous than I am…
7
PM
If I were Mark I’d be making frequent visits to the bathroom. I can’t imagine the combination of anxiety, nervousness, excitedness, and sheer anticipation waiting for my election returns to come in in my first run for office.
7
PM
9:06 PM
Mac Collins is up 13,871 to 13,606 with 74 of 279 reporting in th GA-8
Max Burns is up 8,190 to 4,974 with 37 of 346 reporting in GA-12
This looks like two pickups for the GOP.
7
PM
CNN is calling RI for Whitehouse…. interesting because only like 1% of precincts are reporting.
7
PM
Oh, and I’m giving a talk on today’s election at Duke. Right now. I’m mentioning Mark under “key races to watch”. Anyone want to say anything to your admiring public down in NC?
7
PM
9:30 PM
Walberg leads 55% to 42% with 5% reporting in MI-7
7
PM
They have called MD-Senate for Cardin even though Steele is up in the very few precincts reporting so far…. what the heck? Also nothing is up on Mark’s race yet.
7
PM
9:41 PM
With 83% reporting they are calling the race in IN-2 a loss for Chocola 47% to 53%
7
PM
It could be those are districts that swing heavily GOP anyways and Steele doing poorly there is a bad sign of things to come, neretheless the race shouldn’t be called this early.
7
PM
PA Sec. of State site just crashed, that could mean some results are about to be posted, just have been or simply that everyone and their mother is htting refresh constantly like I am.
7
PM
Tim Pawlenty is down about 43,000 votes with 12% reporting. He needs a big push to even have a prayer at this point.
7
PM
Didn’t see it posted.
Mark has 2,051 votes his oppoenent has 3,414.
There is no report on % of reporting districts for Allegheny County. but statewode the figure is only 26.03%.
7
PM
Pitt Tribune is reporting the same vote totals, but only 16 of 66 reporting.
7
PM
McSweeney is down in Illinois. I think by 4 percent but I cant remember the numbers that flashed across the tv.
7
PM
Jon Kyl is in the fight for his life in Arizona 47% to Pederson’s 50% with 11% reporting. This would be a massive blow to the conservative wing of the Senate GOP.
7
PM
McSweeney is down 45% to 50% with 70% reporting.
7
PM
Jon Kyl is at 52 to 45 with 23% reporting according to msnbc
7
PM
Breaking . . . with 42 of 66 reporting Mark has 6,733 votes to 9,617 votes. Let’s hope the districts that supported Mark were so packed with voters that they are still counting the ballots.
7
PM
I have the same for Kyl, he appears to be turning the corner.
7
PM
With 35% reporting Steele still leads Cardin 240,812 to 235,991. This looks like the upset of the night right here.
7
PM
With 4% reporting Chabot leads 59% to 41% in OH-1.
7
PM
With 64 of 66 reporting Mark has 10,749 to 15,110.
7
PM
The Georgia races are coming down to the wire, with the Dems pulling ahead as more votes come in…. Mac Collins is down 3,000 votes and Max Burns is down about 600 votes. This one will be hard to call until nearly all the precincts are reported.
Talent is holding off McCaskill 51% to 46% with 49% reporting.
Chabot is tied 50-50, 15% reporting.
7
PM
With 56% reporting Cardin is ahead for the first time tonight:
Cardin - 385,490 (50%)
Steele - 365,893 (48%)
Now we have a real race… let’s see what happens with the 44% remaining precincts. Steele has yet to concede.
7
PM
Annapolis, DC area and Baltimore are going to turn out huge numbers for Cardin.
7
PM
Chabot now down 51% to 49% with 37% reporting.
7
PM
Chabot jumps back 51% to 49% with 69% reporting!
8
AM
Webb pulls ahead by 3,000 votes with 99% counted. There will be a recount and the counting of absentee ballots.
8
AM
Tim Pawlenty is making a strong comeback with 643,252 to 658,780 with 53% of the districts reporting.
8
AM
Doug Lamborn has been called to win C0-5 with 60% of the vote.
8
AM
Doug Lamborn wins it in CO-5 60% to 40% with 57% reporting.
8
AM
Damn beat me to it!
8
AM
Gotcha!
With 18% reporting Heather Wilson is down by 500 votes in NM-1 against Patricia Madrid. I believe we’re all familiar with the infamous debate clips that became Wilson campaign ads, which showed Madrid to be completely and utterly incompetent (you know, the one where when asked how she would stop Dems from raising taxes she couldn’t get an answer out, and the one about her taking money just so lobbyists could “buy access” to her office). This race will be interesting…
8
AM
With 79% reporting, Chabot is up 52% to 48%. Looks like this one is won and done.
8
AM
Rich Lowry, Editor of National Review, just said on Fox that Rumsfeld should go.
8
AM
Did he say why? I think Rumsfeld should go, but not because of any of the reasons I have heard from both the left and right recently. I think his plan to modernize the military involved shrinking it down too much to be able to engage a country like China in a full blown land war.
8
AM
Sweeny is done in IL-8, he put up a good fight but has been Beaned.
8
AM
Mike Whalen IA-1 has just lost 43% to 55% with 84% reporting.
8
AM
With 8% reporting Bill Sali holds a norrow lead in ID-1 50% to 44%, way too early to tell, this would be a very nice win for the GOP.
8
AM
Barring absentee ballots and a recount, Allen has lost by 2,265 to Webb with 100% reporting.
8
AM
With 63% reporting, TIm Pawlenty has narrowed the gap to only 2000 or so votes in MN! A huge comeback from the hole he was in earlier.
8
AM
As I noted on the front page, TN has been called for Corker. Dems must win VA (see above), Montana, and Missouri to win the Senate.
8
AM
Montanta is going to Tester 54% to 43% with 28% reporting
MO is going to Talent 50% to 47% with 69% reporting.
VA is up in the air tonight and could be for a week or so.
8
AM
Chabot is up 52 to 48 with 79% reporting.
8
AM
Michele Bachmann wins in MN-6 49% to 43% with 72% reporting. Another Club for Growth win!
8
AM
Fox is reporting that there are many more votes, regular and absentee, to be counted in Virginia. Apparently a large county that trends very conservative close up shop tonight without counting all the votes, and several other counties say that the counting must be finished tomorrow because their employees went home for the night…. so this is not over yet.
8
AM
I already reported that dawg, get with the program.
[your a n00b]
[no, I am the Real Thing]
8
AM
I gave more details Mike, because I am the Real Thing (you are not)… bite me.
8
AM
John Gard of WI-8 is down 8,000 votes with 64% reporting.
8
AM
Pawlenty takes the lead 778,490 to 770,907 with 67% reporting! This is his first lead all night long.
8
AM
100% reporting Chabot wins 53% to 47%, yet another Club win.
8
AM
It’s good to see so many of these Club nominees winning. Along with Pence and Shadegg running for leadership in the House, this could bode well for the future of the GOP in Congress.
8
AM
GA-8, 94% reporting:
Mac Collins Republican 73,075 (50%)
Jim Marshall (i) Democrat 71,878 (50%)
GA-12, 92% reporting:
John Barrow (i) Democrat 62,509 (50%)
Max Burns Republican 61,594 (50%)
8
AM
Heather Wilson is still down to Patricia Madrid in NM-01 by less than 1400 votes with 83% reporting.
8
AM
You might want to retract that call for Talent in Missouri, Mike…
8
AM
I think it is safe to say that the remaining vote left in both GA-8 and GA-12 will not add up to either a Collins or Burns win. Both of these men came extremely close in a bad year for Republicans.
8
AM
McCaskill is up 49 to 48 with 80% reporting, now that they are getting returns from St. Louis and Kansas City.
8
AM
It would seem I spoke too soon . . .
8
AM
I didn’t call MO for Talent, I just reported the results. I think Talent could still win, but fraud in STL and KS is rampant. I think this one gets litigated.
8
AM
Arnold’s giving his speech.. he said, “You know, I love doing sequels.”
8
AM
I guess you saying “MO is going to Talent with…” made me think you were calling it. My bad.
8
AM
Adrien Smith wins in my relatives district out in NE-3, 55% to 45% with 69% reporting. The Club is rolling up the wins.
8
AM
With 81% in McCaskill is up over Talent by less than 15,000 votes.
8
AM
Harold Ford Jr. is giving his concession speech. He looks like he’s on the verge of tears…. maybe he can salve his wounds at the Playboy Mansion?
8
AM
He had already won . . . then he selfdestructed. Tragic, but it is his own fault.
8
AM
With 37% precincts reporting, Club candidate Bill Sali is winning in ID-1 with 49%-46% against Democrat Larry Grant.
8
AM
Great, so here’s what happens when Stevens retires: Bush will face the choice of appointing a pro-Roe judge, or not appointing anyone at all. And, the second one is not really an option.
8
AM
No, he’ll probably re-nominate Harriet Miers. Great.
