Why is Bush doing this now instead of before the election?

Before the election would mean he admits there are problems in Iraq aiding Democrats. After the election it helps change the subject of the Democratic victory.

Wouldn’t it help appease the millions of voters who chose Democrats because they were pissed about the war? Seems to me like it would help the Republican cause.
Also, by doing this President Bush is indeed admitting a problem in Iraq, and that the problem can be fixed with new leadership. As we all know, nothing’s changed in the last couple of days, or even months, in Iraq except Saddam’s death sentence.
This means that President Bush chose not to solve a problem at the earliest possible moment for political reasons. I wonder how many troops died since Bush decided he was going to get rid of Rumsfeld but kept it to himself…

No one can deny the political timing. But they will try.

The reason Rumsfeld had to go was because the military was blantantly ignoring his orders. The problem of course isn’t really with Rumsfeld, but his boss.
The problem in Iraq is that we aren’t very effective in wiping out the opposition. The fact that the war is still on in 2006 is slightly embarassing. We don’t need more troops, just more engagement of the enemy.

Gates is a former president of the National Association of Eagle Scouts, so he’s got my endorsement.

Gates is a poor choice as time will show, but I’ll write more on this later. Bush has decided to abandon Iraq, Gates is the first step in that process.
