The Difference Between Us and Them

Written by Sam on December 10th, 2006

Congressman William Jefferson D-New Orleans, with his wife Andrea Jefferson speaks to supporters in New Orleans Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006. Jefferson defeated democratic State Representative Karen Carter for re-election.

I don’t generally like to make partisan comparisons because I hold my views and ideals far above being a Republican, but there is a noticable difference between Republicans and Democrats when it comes to upholding those principles. Case and point, William Jefferson. If a Republican Congressman had $90,000 stashed in a freezer in his house which he embezzled through bribery would that man be reelected to office, let alone even be allowed to run again? We took care of our Mark Foleys and Duke Cunninghams, but what of the Democrats? William Jefferson is just another to add to the list below Alcee Hastings, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Robert Byrd, Barney Franks, Gerry Studds, and so on and so on.

I shouldn’t be suprised though. This is the same city full of brainwashed welfare leeching trough feeders that reelected Ray Nagin to be their mayor.

I agree that his reelection is a disgrace.

To be fair, though, you should point out that Democratic leadership strongly supported his opponent and that Nancy Pelosi stripped him of his leadership position immediately. The GOP never did this with DeLay, as I recall.

The FBI didn’t find $90,000 in DeLay’s freezer. His case was so laughably politically motivated it’s beyond funny. Doesn’t even compare.

    Nice try, though.

Fine — the DeLay argument is for another day. Strike the last sentence from my comment and read it again.

My main point was that you can hardly blame the Democratic party establishment because a bunch of fools decided to reelect this joker. They did everything they could to disable him.

Exactly - Sam’s point was that Democratic voters were much more forgiving of their crooks than Republican voters.

And you’re proud of everyone that Republican voters have elected over the years? Claiming that there’s some kind of inherent endemic problem with Democrats versus Republicans is pretty silly.

Democrats tend to return their crooks and cheats to Washington, the Gop does not. Republicans are held to a higher standard.

“Democrats tend to return their crooks and cheats to Washington, the Gop does not. Republicans are held to a higher standard.”

The main difference here that I see is that Republicans pretend to be moral and good, while Democrats instead are honest about how corrupt they are. Both parties have absurd amounts of corruption and sleaziness, the difference is the Republican party pretends not to.

Your logic is completely backwards. Republicans may claim to be the “moral values” party more often, but Democrats have taken up the “culture of corruption” banner against the Republicans as of late. What are the results? Well, as shown, Republican voters aren’t generally kind to people in their party who they view as being immoral or corrupt; whereas Democrats have a history of returning their members to office regardless. (Gerry Studds, William Jefferson, Jack Murtha getting the Speaker-elect’s support for Majority leader, etc.).

You’re claiming that Republicans claim not to have corruption and sleaziness? Then how come Republicans who are shown to be corrupt or immoral are constantly either voted out of office or choose to resign, while the Democrats are constantly re-elected?

You need to re-think your approach here David.
