Brownback: Flat Tax it is

Written by Mark Harris on January 15th, 2007

Brownback has officially added the flat tax to his platform. Well Brownback has now officially laid down the gauntlet in the race to the right on fiscal issues. McCain will surely not follow suit, nor would I imagine Giulani, which leaves the question as to what Romney will do. I just am not sure how much passion lies behind the flat tax movement anymore.

If he wants to make the income tax flat, does he intend to fix all the other taxes that are regressive, like the sales tax, property tax and the payroll tax?

Economists have repeatedly shown that the tax system, taken as a whole, is basically flat. Making the mildly progressive income tax flat would make the system as a whole regressive.

Brownback’s trying to become the small government candidate in the race. This is part of the strategy to become the candidate for all wings of the Republican party. Unfortunately for him, he’ll probably fail because he only has credentials as a social conservative plus he’s also a self-described “compassionate conservative” as well.
