Governor Romney makes it official
Written by Benaiah on February 14th, 2007It’s official. I am not sure who I am backing. Honestly, I don’t like any of them. I could support Newt, but I think he is too much of a policy wonk to win the Presidency. I know he says he is not running, but nobody makes that many trips to Iowa and New Hampshire and doesn’t run.

I agree. There isn’t a star in the group. Romney is charismatic enough and says all the right things, but his flip-flopping is a major problem.
Mark Sanford would have been PERFECT, but he has reiterated that he is not running.
Newt is perceived as a conservative, but he isn’t. He got soft towards the end of his Speakership… seeking approval from the media by kissing up to liberals like Hillary. My major complaint is his infidelity. The whole affair thing and failed marriage after failed marriage would make him a no-go with me and many other evangelicals.

Well if infidelity is the new litmus test, count out Newt, McCain, Giuliani and about 3/4trs of congress. Not that I am in any way excusing it

I like Governor Sanford. Maybe he will change his mind.

Romney already lost the Jewish vote. Much like the “blogosphere”, we might not have a whole lot of influence in deciding Presidents, but he still alienated us. Also, we control the media.
While announcing his candidacy, he talked about bringing all the groups in America together with mutual respect. However, he did this from a museum dedicated to a man who received a medal from Hitler for supporting the Nazis and spreading anti-Jewish propaganda.
Romney’s a real winner.

“I’m pretty sure that Jews who were that offended by the venue of Romney’s announcement were not going to vote for him in the first place.”
So a candidate shouldn’t worry about insulting people if they’re not going to vote for him? Macaca, anyone? How about John Kerry’s “botched joke” about people who don’t get into college getting “stuck in Iraq”?
“On the other hand, Jewish Republicans are probably more concerned about real issues”
Anti-Semitism isn’t a real issue?

I think it’s (anti-Semitism) much less of an issue than you’re making it out to be.
And frankly I think criticism for using the Henry Ford Museum because he was an anti-Semite is misguided. If a politician were to announce at Mt. Vernon, or Monticello, I think an attack on him because George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned slaves would be ridiculous. Henry Ford had his flaws just like any other man, and men of prominence are not perfect. I’m not trying to excuse his anti-Semitism, I’m just saying sometimes people are so sensitive and picky over the details that they fail to realize that throughout history, there have always been bigots and men with faults who made great accomplishments (and Henry Ford’s contribution to the automobile industry was a great accomplishment).
If Henry Ford lived in today’s world, his anti-Semitism would be much more taboo and socially unacceptable than it was when he lived, and who knows, in today’s environment he may or may not have still been an anti-Semite. We can’t pretend that beliefs and attitudes were always the way they are today in popular culture and society.

If it’s any consolation, I have no idea what you guys are talking about. I’m not Jewish but still…

Romney never had the Jewish vote, but to say that the Henry Ford museum represents anti-semitism is nuts. The state of Michigan funds that place, are the voters and Democrats (who run the state) anti-semites as well? Of course not. The guy’s private and proffesional lives are seperate.
I am Roman Catholic and despite many of the Founders skepticism of Catholics and attacks upon Rome and the Pope I don’t get upset about it. That was the standard default mode for non-Catholic Christians back then and it doesn’t diminish them in my eyes. Henry Ford was a man of his times. He was distasteful IMO and wouldn’t have been a friend of mine. He was a powerful and impressive American who helped build this country into what it is today. To neglect his contributions because of his flaws would be unfair.
