Romney Airs Florida Ad in Spanish
Written by Sam on March 6th, 2007
This annoys me. In order to vote you have to be an American citizen, right? In order to become a citizen aren’t you required to show some proficiency in English?
So what gives?
Presidential contender Mitt Romney has tapped a prominent Cuban- American Republican in Florida for his first radio ad targeting Spanish-speaking voters.
Al Cardenas, former chairman of the Florida Republican Party and a close ally of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, describes Romney as a friend of the Hispanic community and an ally in its drive for a Democratic Cuba.

The target is Cubans who have kept Spanish alive in their homes even though they (for the most part) can speak English pretty well. It is out and out political pandering, but in this case not to a group that can’t be said to be loyal American citizens.

With the GOP continuing to promote candidates with no strict adherence to conservative principles, the base needs to make it clear that it can, and will, leave the party.

They should run ads in Norwegian on the Iron Range too.

Cuban Americans compose a large portion of the Republican Party in Florida. I think running Spanish ads in Flordia is different than running them in Texas or a border state.

Unrelated to Romney, but
Legally, yes. Hasn’t stopped the groups in California who register illegals.
Well, you can become a citizen just by being born here and not speaking any language. This child could then leave the US for a non English speaking country then return here after age 18 and not know a single word of English, but still register to vote.
