EXACTLY How We Should Talk About Immigration

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Fred Thompson has another homerun

I know some of the more hardline folks on the blog may think Thompson is being soft and has in the past been soft on immigration, but I think this way of talking is exactly how we should talk.

1. Mexico, we love you and your people. We want you as an ally and partner
2. We are a sovereign nation and reserve the right to control out borders just like you control your southern border
3. We will clamp down on the border
4. The only real long term solution is an economic boom in Mexico, so lets get rid of this socialist non-sense thats keeping Mexico down

Ok flame away…

What Does This Mean for Jindal?

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

It comes as no shock to me whatsoever that Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco announced this afternoon that she will not seek reelection.  Blanco was pretty much dead on arrival and she obviously has enough sense to realize this.  The question is will this be better or worse for Bobby Jindal?

If he were to have faced Blanco next year in the gubernatorial race he no doubt would have thoroughly smoked her.  With her now eliminated from the equation are his chances still as good?  Former Democrat Senator John Breaux has been toying with the idea of running for governor and he is expected to make an announcement “soon”.  Breaux is very popular in Louisiana and he wouldn’t make it an easy race for Jindal.

Simultaneous to this is the reelection of Democrat Senator Mary Landrieu next year.  The conventional wisdom is that she is the most vulnerable Democrat Senator in 2008.  Regardless of that, recent polls that I have seen show her losing to only one potential Republican candidate …..  Bobby Jindal …..  who has expressed no interest in that seat.

Should Jindal go for the better odds and try and take down Landrieu and possibly help win the GOP back the Senate majority or should he bank on Baton Rouge?  Lots of things can still happen so it’s too hard to say, but it’s an interesting scenario.

Specter Announces Run For Sixth Term

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

For those of us who live in Pennsylvania this really shouldn’t be a surprise. When Arlen ran for reelection in 2004 and said it would be his last time we all knew it was a load of crap.  Specter is power hungry and he’ll only stop when he ceases to breathe.

Republican Sen. Arlen Specter, a moderate who has often clashed with the Bush administration and his fellow GOP lawmakers, plans to seek a sixth term in 2010.

Specter, 77, will formally begin his re-election campaign April 4 at a Philadelphia fundraiser, Scott Hoeflich, a Specter spokesman, confirmed on Monday.

Fox News

I am not surprised that Specter is already starting this early. He came within a single percentage point of being defeated in the Republican Primary of 2004 by then Congressman Pat Toomey.  He isn’t going to take any chances this time.  Toomey is now the President of the National Club for Growth.

Specter’s last re-election campaign was the toughest of his career. He barely defeated former Rep. Pat Toomey in a primary race in which his age was contrasted with that of his youthful-looking opponent, but Specter went on to handily win the general election.

It is unknown as to whether or not Toomey will make another go at picking off Arlen, particularly having come so close the last time. The rumors are mixed that he may have other interests in mind.

Gonzales Out? UPDATED

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

According to this article at the Politico, linked from Drudge, Gonzales is on his way out the door as Attorney General of the United States. I posted on this earlier, pointing out what a sham this whole “scandal” appears to be at this point, so I’m not going to beat a dead horse.

I will simply observe, as many have over the years about this Administration, that the White House seems to have a severe lack of will to stand up for the truth and principles of how the government works for such procedural matters. Fire Gonzales because 8 out of 93 U.S. Attorneys were fired by the White House, when they serve at the pleasure of the President? Are you kidding me?

I do not know all of the facts of this case, as most people do not. I do know, however, that from what I have seen thus far this is completely ridiculous. It is a shame that the Administration is so willing to bend over and take whatever bullcrap Nancy and Co. deem necessary. How many U.S. Attorneys did the Clinton Administration fire? Oh yeah, that’s right, all 93 of them.

It’s a sad day when the White House is so unwilling to defend their actions that appear to be completely legal and reasonable.

[Update]  Neal Boortz has this to say about this whole mess:

The White House appears ready to throw him under the bus for the manner in which 8 U.S. Attorneys were fired. Once again, a scandal invented and nurtured by Democrats, with eager help from the leftist/Democrat media, consumes another public official. But is the firing/resignation justified? The answer, of course, is absolutely not. No matter how many embarrassing e-mails are trotted out, the facts remain the facts: the U.S. Attorneys are political appointees that serve at the pleasure of the president. It is and always has been that way. George W. Bush could get up one day and fire them all for no reason. That’s how it works.

But when you mix a Bush-hating Democratic Congress with a spineless administration, this is what you get. And it’s too bad, because now another decent public servant will get pushed out of office with nowhere to go to get his reputation back. The problem is that Bush will throw Gonzales to the wolves in an attempt to appease his new Democratic masters…but as always, the problem with paying blackmail is that the price always goes up. Who will be next? Karl Rove?

First Real Polling - Fred Thompson, a reality?

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

PRESIDENT - MICHIGAN - GOP PRIMARY
John McCain 30%
Rudy Giuliani 26%
Mitt Romney 21%
Newt Gingrich 16%
Fred Thompson 2% (volunteered)
Sam Brownback 1%

Ok so this poll came out today and I am surprised no one has written about it yet. The results seem somewhat disappointing at first until you consider that Fred Thompson WASN’T INCLUDED in the poll. Eight people actually listened to all the options and then without being told they could pick any one else listed Fred Thompson. This is astounding. Consider that Thompson beat on Brownback who not only was listed but is an announced candidate.

Obviously he needs to get way more than 2% but my guess is that if he had been actually listed his share would have been somewhere in the 8-10% range.
