Written by Mark Harris on April 2nd, 2007

The McCain campaign is a sinking ship. With $12.5m raised in the first quarter, the McCain campaign raised a real red flag of a sinking ship. Wow.

With all these “defections” of Romney fundraisers to McCain, you’d think he would’ve raised twice that amount.

It’s a sad state of affairs when raising 36 times that national average income is considered a sign of failure…

McCain probably has more name Name ID than any other candidate, minus Clinton or Giuliani. Your average “Joe Six-Pack” has heard the name John McCain. That means that a person like Romney has to raise tons more money or start winning over the media in order to get his name out there.

McCain doesn’t need to raise a ton of money, because people know who he is. He’s spent years in the US Senate and years on television earning free media to add to his arsenal. I am not surprised Romney raised 3 times as much as McCain. He has to in order to compete.

The real question: Can Romney continue raising money at that pace or is he maxed out?
