Written by Mark Harris on April 3rd, 20074/3/2007
Giuliani - 26% (-9%)
McCain - 16% (+1%)
F. Thompson - 14% (n/a)
Gingrich - 11% (unch)
Mitt Romney - 8% (unch)
Huckabee - 3%
No one else breaks 1%Cross tab - Self-identified “Very Conservative” Voters
Giuliani - 20%
F. Thompson - 19%
Gingrich - 18%
McCain - 14%
Interesting tidbits…
- Thompson jumps into third place ahead of Romney and Gingrich which mirrors the Gallup results
- Thompson’s support in this poll come almost entirely out of Giuliani’s base
- Romney and Gingrich who other polls showed loss of support with Thompson in the race shows no changes
- Giuliani’s 20% draw among very conservative voters is indicative of his “soft” support which could evaporate if Thompson, Gingrich, or McCain could ever peel off those voters

These numbers are very telling. They show that Thompson can get the conservative vote and also is very strong on the security issues that Rudy gets support on.

Has Gingrich even announced if he is running yet?

I think this shows that Thompson is stronger on the security issues than Newt or Romney. If I am Rudy, I would rather go head to head with Romney over Thompson any day.

He’ll announce in September. If Thompson gets in the race, it is unlikely that Gingrich will.

I think Newt is working on a deal with Romney for the VP spot.

The rest of the GOP field has to look at these numbers and groan. All of the $$ they have spent didn’t budge the conservative mindset an inch. Thompson has it sealed up, all he has to do is pull the trigger.

I think you guys are planning the honey moon and the girl hasn’t even said yes yet.
Would it be awesome if Thompson ran? Yes. Does that mean he will for sure? No.
This is directed more at the blog sphere in general then anyone in particular on this site.

Another guy named Thompson is running. That’s just way too confusing.

You can rest assured that on this blog and most others, the guy we refer to in cheerleader-like awe is Fred Thompson, not Tommy Thompson.
