Vitter on DC Madam List
Written by Sam on July 10th, 2007
“Family Values” Senator David Vitter (R-LA) is reported to be listed on the D.C. Madam’s phone list that was revealed late yesterday.
The first-term Republican senator declined interview requests Tuesday, and he made no public appearances in the Capitol. The night before, he’d made a startling confession in an e-mail to The Associated Press:
“This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible. Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling.”
This apparently happened several years ago, prior to him being a Senator, but possibly while he was a Congressman. There don’t appear to be any specific details as to when the indiscretion took place. On my own personal note, I could care less. This is his own private business that he needs to work out within his own family and as far as I am concerned doesn’t impede his ability to be a good representative. However, to anybody out there considering a possible run for political office, if you have scandals in your past and skeletons in your closet, do us all a favor. Please don’t run under the party of “family values.” Trying to convince Americans that a traditional conservative society is best for our nation’s longevity is a daunting enough task as it is without boobs like David Vitter and the other stooges in Congress who have been exposed as frauds over the past couple of years constantly mucking up the waters.
I am so sick and tired of this garbage popping up on the news every few months. We lost five Congressional seats in generally safe Republican districts last year because of scandal and corruption. It’s no wonder the number of self-identified Republicans is dropping. People expect this behavior from Democrats. They have no moral compass. But the Republican Party makes a point of telling America that we are better than that. Thanks for the help there, Dave.
UPDATE (Alex): Vitter has also been linked to another similiar service, this one in New Orleans. Story here.

So now Guiliani has one campaign leader indicted on drug charges and another leading supporter is a married man who enjoys frequenting brothels … I wonder what about Guiliani makes him attractive to people like that (maybe its ALL just a big coincidence)

The nola.com story was an interesting read, notably this quote:
—
At the New Orleans brothel, Maier said Vitter spent time with several women, but preferred one in particular named Wendy. She said all the girls that were with Vitter described him as a kind, respectful man, who did not talk down to them or use drugs.
“I’m not out to ruin a marriage, I’m out to save a man,” Maier said. “I want his wife to know he’s a good man, I want his children to know he’s a good father. If he had sex out of wedlock, so what? At least he stayed with his children.”

Is cornering the madam vote a plus in Louisiana? Are there points for the ladies at the brothel thinking you’re a good guy?

Well at least he did not use bribe money from his freezer to pay for sex at the brothel.

Well, the NOLA story changes my view a bit now, knowing that. A one time transgression I won’t hold against someone, but multiple incidents reflect a serious flaw in the man’s character for him to cheat on his wife this many times.
Perhaps a resignation is in order for the good of the party.

We all make mistakes. The voters of Louisiana didn’t elected Vitter on the condition that he would be perfect. I don’t think he should or will resign.
What impact if any will this have on the 08 LA Sen race?

In 1998 he called for the impeachment of Bill Clinton over the lack of moral ethics. He must resign!

Over the past decade, Republicans chose to appeal to voters who valued monogamy over competence and governmental service. Why didn’t they vet their candidates for monogamy? Perhaps no Republican would be available for office? Or was the appeal to “values” voter just a hypocritical ruse to attract votes? Would people who disliked philanderers naturally support polluters, minimum-wage haters, and smooth-talking financiers? I don’t think so. Republicans have simply been found out about who they really are: the party of the elites. You can’t save an ideology that is antidemocratic in the US, except by hiding its antidemocratic leanings. Hey, it worked for quite a while, but I think the ride is over.

He is not going to resign.
Considering the Democrats are now a minority in Louisiana, he probably will not have a hard time being reelected in 2010. Also, Louisiana will have to Republicans when the Senate returns in January 2009 if the current polling holds up in the state.

I think republicans need to stop talking about family values, because its just a political ploy thats begining to backfire.

I’d say that talking about “family values” may begin to be approaching the marginal gains level but not specifically abortion. Abortion has become a huge plus for the GOP as more and more Americans identify as pro-life and even greater numbers support limitations.
I wish the GOP would drop entirely the gay issue as I truly believe it is a generational issue that in 20 years will not even exist as a political issue (think inter-racial marriage issues in the 1950’s and 1960’s). I think if you even polled Republicans aged 18 to 35 you’d find probably 70% could care less about the gay issue and that if they did their position would be the opposite of the general Republican position.
So basically “family values” may not be good to talk about, but certain issues associated with family values are pluses and winners (pro-life, banning cloning, creationism v. evolution, etc.) ….others are not (banning music lyrics, banning pornography, gay issues).

TITUSVILLE — Florida Rep. Robert “Bob” Allen, R-Merritt Island, was arrested this afternoon at Veteran’s Memorial Park on East Broad Street for solicitation for prostitution.
He is currently being booked into Brevard County Jail in Sharpes. The charge is a second-degree misdemeanor, according to police.
According to police, the park was under surveillance today by a detail of undercover Titusville Police officers. Officers noticed Allen acting suspicious as he went in and out of the men’s restroom three times. Minutes later, he solicited an undercover male officer inside the restroom, offering to perform oral sex for $20.
