McCain Changes Tune On Immigration

Written by Sam on August 3rd, 2007
Republican presidential hopeful John McCain on Thursday backed a scaled-down proposal that imposes strict rules to end illegal immigration but doesn’t include a path to citizenship. The move away from a comprehensive measure is an about-face for the Arizona senator, who had been a leading GOP champion of a bill that included a guest worker program and would have legalized many of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants living in the U.S. It failed earlier this year.

Sounds like McCain has finally come to the realization as to why he has sunk in the polls like an anchor.  The problem is, it’s too little, too late.

    The dream bill (personally):

    1. Automatic 3 year prison term for knowingly hiring an illegal immigrant.

    2. Automatic suspension of federal funding on all levels for any state or city government that has an ordinance forbidding cops from asking immigration status.

    3. Automatic jail time for landlords knowingly renting to illegals.

    4. Mandatory 3 month review of all ICE offices to ensure that they are performing a quota number of raids per week.

    5. Immediate construction of fence/wall along border.

    6. Immediate cut off of all funding for any state or locale that pays for education and social services for illegals.

    7. Immediate cut off of all funding for any state that provides driver’s licenses to illegals.

    8. End to automatic citizenship for babies born to illegal aliens in the US.

    9. Tripling of Border Patrol.

    10. Threat to Mexico of end to NAFTA if illegal immigration does not drop by 75% over the next 5 years.

First it doesn’t sound like McCain is doing this out of political aims at all. It sounds like he wants to get something done that helps the country. But there goes that SaveTheGOP cynicism again, “anything they do must be to win votes.”

Gceres’s post #10 is typical of problems within the “legal immigration” crew: you are perfectly willing to take the United States economy hostage to achieve your ends.

first i dont like the idea of federal govermetn telling states and towns what to do. second its not land owners job to determine immigratin status, and cancelling nafa will just casue more mexicans into desperation. also anchor babies are a nuessence, but the constituion is pretty clear on birth=citzenship and without that provision it could lead to stateless babies.

Joe McCarthy, once again coming to the aid of the RINO who’s spat in conservatives’ eyes for years. True to form, Joe, true to form.

wrt Jim’s comments: I don’t like the idea of any government agency telling anyone what to do but it is often the best of other undesirable alternatives. If the federal government would create a foolproof identity card, anyone who sees it could determine citizenship status. Anchor babies are not just a nuisance, they are a major threat. They don’t get citizenship due to the constituion (which apparently you haven’t read), but from a misguided interpretation of the 14th amendment which was developed to assure citizenship to offspring of former African slaves. If illegal immigrants want citizenship for their babies, have the babies in the “old country”. “Stateless babies” are off the bottom of my priority list. You need to find a “liberal” blog.
