Ames Straw Poll Results
Written by Sam on August 12th, 2007It turned out pretty much the way I expected. Romney finished first, Huckabee second, and Brownback third. It’s hard to say how much of an indicator this poll will really be though, considering Giuliani and McCain were not present. Additionally, the possible entrances of Fred Thompson and Gingrich could shake up the whole thing. Tommy Thompson finished a miserable sixth place and Duncan Hunter even worse in ninth, so I think we are going to see the last of them very shortly.
- Romney - 31%
- Huckabee - 18.1%
- Brownback - 15.3%
- Tancredo - 13.7%
- Paul - 9.1%
- T. Thompson - 7.3%
- F Thompson
- Rudy Giuliani
- Duncan Hunter
- John McCain
- John Cox

How in the world did Huckabee get 2nd?
And Brownback 3rd? They should be beneath the bottom of the list. …and the Thompson twins trailing beneath Paul? One of the twins should be in WWF League along with Huck and Back. (and Al Sharpton) How on earth is anyone supposed to remain Republican with choices like these? No disrespect to Dr. Paul or Tancredo, or Hunter.

I expected Romney to win. If he hadn’t it would have been a major failure for his campaign being the only first tier candidate present.
Whether they were present or not the Giuliani and McCain campaigns are going to have serious issues given they finished eight and tenth respectively.
I anticipated Mike Huckabee finishing in the top five but not second. Then again Pat Robertson won the 1988 poll so there is a strong social conservative presence.
I didn’t expect Sam Brownback finishing in the top five let alone third. I suppose he was third for the same reason Huckabee was second.
Tommy Thompson, the withdrawn Jim Gilmore, or the unofficial candidates Fred Thompson and Newt Gingrich would have been much better choices for those looking for an experience conservative voice than Huckabee and Brownback.
It was a pleasant surprise that Tom Tancredo came in fourth since I didn’t see him being in the top five.
Ron Paul isn’t the anathema for me as he is for others so I was glad to see him finishing in the top five where I predicted.
I didn’t see Tommy Thompson finish in the top five even though he is a better choice than Huckabee and Brownback. I expect T. Thompson to withdraw.
Fred Thompson isn’t an official candidate so nothing’s lost but had he finished higher he definitely would have gained.
I’m surprised to see that Tancredo all finished higher than Duncan Hunter. Their views are very similar and Hunter in my opinion is there more credible candidate of the two. I don’t foresee Hunter withdrawing though; he seems to believe he is the true conservative in the race and that he is the one to proclaim the message whether he wins or loses.
