Hastert to Retire

Written by Sam on August 14th, 2007

WASHINGTON - Rep. Dennis Hastert of Illinois, who served as speaker of the House longer than any Republican in history, intends to retire next year at the end of his current term, party officials said Tuesday.

A formal announcement is planned for Friday.

Raleigh News & Observer

I was expecting this to happen in the not too distant future.  It was widely speculated Hastert would not run again, no longer being a leader in the House.  I can honestly say I won’t really miss him.  He was culpable in the blowout Republicans received last year.  He could have reigned in the spending.  He could have been a leader on ethics reform in the midst of scandal after scandal.  Instead he turned a blind eye.

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. The Democrats want to spend a lot more money than Denny Hastert.

Actually, the Bush Administration has spent far more than the Clinton Admin did. The Republicans have preached to us for years that they are the party of fiscal conservation and small government and when they were given complete power for four years to implement that, we found out they lied.

Thanks Sam; your statement does not contradict what I just said, and also fails to credit the Gingrich GOP with holding down spending for six years during Clinton’s two terms. Fact remains the Democrats want to spend a lot more money than Denny Hastert… and perhaps even more than Ted Stevens!

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good, Mussolini is better than Hitler so I support him.

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good, in a perfect world we would invade Afghanistan and go after Al-Qaeda but that might provoke even more terrorism so we should stick with treating this as a law enforcement issue.

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good, sure the Republican Party is run by unpatriotic crooks who are robbing their country blind and weakening the nation for decades to come, but it could always be worse!

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good, we could always get out of this foxhole and charge the enemy pillbox, but that would require us to be real men with spines, better let someone else get shot.

Joe don’t be surprised when no one follows you when you yell charge. Your entire attitude regarding politics (and I imagine life as well) is not a shining example of leadership, but rather a nice way to keep your head down and weasel your way sideways through life. The men who built this nation were never afraid to risk it all to make the perfect the enemy of the good. I guess you would call what we have now, “good”. I call it tyranny.

Who’s letting the perfect be the enemy of the good? Hastert isn’t good. Well, not good from a conservative perspective–but perhaps quite good from Joe’s perspective.
