Something Non-Political

Written by Michael K on August 23rd, 2007

I have no interest in the politics of this. I just hope that this child is able to recover from his injuries and live a normal life.

This is not non-political. You only care about him because he got hurt by an Arab. If he’d gotten maimed by an American soldier, it would have been fair spoils of war in your book.

I probably shouldn’t even respond to such an outrageous insult, but I will anyway. For one thing, how could what I actually wrote not possibly be true? I wrote “I have no interest in the politics of this. I just hope that this child is able to recover from his injuries and live a normal life.” Who could argue with that? In hindsight, that post is so milktoast that it was probably not even worth publishing. I would hope that any child could recover from an injury like that. I would feel the same if this child had suffered his injuries in a car accident.

As for the idea that I only care about this because the evil monsters who did this were Arab. First of all, if an American Soldier did what these men did, deliberately set a small child’s face on fire, I would be beside myself with rage. I would want those Soldiers locked up for the rest of their lives in the worst prison on Earth. This crime would have been the top story in every newspaper on earth as well, had Americans been behind it. As it is, it is just one in a long list of monstrous depravities pulled off by the various anti-American forces in Iraq. No one cares because we’ve grown numb to it.

You however, are probably referring to the accidental injuries caused by American soldiers. And yes, I do care about those children. I care about those children because it’s right to care about them, and because it is frankly smart strategy to care about them. We are trying to win hearts and minds, and every innocent Iraqi we wound or kill only makes that harder. American military doctors have done great work in caring for these children, and our soldiers have tried to avoid any extra casualties. But innocent casualties have happened, and this is an awful part of the war, and something that cannot ever be ignored or swept under the rug. We have a responsibility to care for these children, and I hope that we live up to that responsibility.

Incidentally, you are making a lot of assumptions about what I care about given that I’ve yet to post anything about the Iraq war.
