Gonzo is Gone

Written by Sam on August 27th, 2007
The president praised and defended Gonzales during brief remarks in Waco, Texas. “After months of unfair treatment, that has created a harmful distraction at the Justice Department, Judge Gonzales decided to resign his position and I accept his decision,” Bush said. “It’s sad that we live in a time when a talented and honorable person like Alberto Gonzales is impeding from doing important work because his good name was dragged through the mud for political reasons.”

I really don’t know if this is a good thing or not, but personally I didn’t like Alberto Gonzales.  I believe he played a role in the prosecution of the border guards, but that is just my own opinion.  In any case, I’m glad to see him go.

    I concur.

A bonus: Because his name is just about officially mud, Gonzales will never be nominated to the Supreme Court.

Gonzales managed to create scandals out of thin air through his own incompetence. The Justice Department is too important to be held by the President’s buddy. Paul Clement is an impressive guy and he is well regarded in the DC legal community. I’ve already talked to several lawyers who know him and think highly of him. So we are in good hands in the interim at least. As far as who Bush picks to finish the term? Who knows? He could stick with Clement. Chertoff is more qualified to be AG than he is to be Homeland Security Secretary. But he brings serious Katrina and Immigration baggage. Ted Olsen would be a fantastic choice.

Of course, Harriet Miers is still available as well….

This is one of the things I hate about conservatives there loyalty is so static for such petty things. The biggest thing gonzo took heat for was challenging the immortality of us attorneys. This resignation will just spur more autonomous leeks from liberal bureaucrats within the federal government for political spite. Bush values loyalty because it is a commodity that is in extremely short supply in Washington. I just pray that Gonzo doesn’t decide to return the favor to bush and write a book passing the entire buck to the president. The Leadership Institute is right in saying that you only have your friends and your word go back on either of them and your dead. Bush is slowly killing what little is left of his presidency.

I hope Gonzo does pass the buck to the President, because Bush deserves to suffer after what he’s done to the conservative cause and the country.

    Squeal like a pig, George.
