Justice for the Jena 6?
Written by Benaiah on September 20th, 2007I am trying to understand the case of the Jena 6. Is attempted murder justified because some dumb white kids hung some nooses in a tree? According to the race warlords Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton it is. They talk about justice for the Jena 6, but what about justice for the young man they allegedly assaulted? Are they being charged with a hate crime?

I agree with half of this. The individual in question has a history of violent behavior, and clearly deserves to be punished. I think attempted murder is a bit much, though it was lowered to some kind of assault, which seems reasonable.
On the other hand, Sharpton and Jackson are rightfully outraged that the student who hung a noose from a tree on school property was not expelled (recall that he was initially expelled, but some board overturned it). Hanging a noose from a tree is not a “dumb” prank, given the context.

Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are greedy buffoons who should never be trusted.
However, there are fair questions to be asked about this case
NRO had a great link to an article (http://www.nysun.com/article/63055?page_no=1) by John McWhorter who is usually very fair on such subjects (although I disagree with some aspects of the article).
The white kid who was “beat up” was apperently out of the hosipital in a few hours and was out and about.
-This seems to be clearly not attempted murder when considering it really was 6 against 1 they would have done much more damage to the white kid.

having read the article above, i would say i agree with most except that hanging a noose is not just a prank, and the students who put that up deserved much harsher punishments

Jackson and Sharpton are irrelevent. What matters is whether the actions of these 6 supported a charge of attempted murder, and if not, why those charges were brought. From what I have seen, attempted murder seems to be a real stretch. Out of control prosecutors are a menace to society, and if this prosecutor was motivated by race, then this needs to be dealt with as harshly as possible.
On the other hand, it appears that the murder charges were dropped, and only lesser charges were prosecuted. 6 individuals beating up 1 individual would classify as assault.
I agree that the students who put up the noose should have been suspended. The connection between the two incidents though, is not clear to me. What was the relationship between the boy who was beaten and the ones who put up the noose? Nothing I have read has made that clear.
