What happens if this league of Democracies turn out to be even more Anti-American?

Even worst--what happens if our intention to form a rival league of nations is seen by others as a way to create a block of nations that will answer to our beck and call?

I can understand the frustratation with the bureaucratic nature of the UN--but to think that we can solve the problem by forming another "UN" sounds a bit silly.

problem with this is russia and china especially are powerful enough by themselves to make any sort of santions uneffective. this has been shown in mymarrar. with iran the main problem is germany lack of willingess to stop their oil ties. it also can encourage democarcy only if it shows true benefits to the member countries such as the WTO has. which i doubt it really could. the main problem is not the the idea of the UN buts its current structure.

I'd also note that John McCain has a very similar proposal, I believe it is called the League of Democracies as well.

In regards to why this is a good idea, I'd have to respond to the comments above about why it wouldn't be.

1) Excluding China would be a good thing.....China's positions on the Security Council in regards to Iran and Darfur are very troubling.
2) It could be used as a leverage to get countries to become even more democratic. The countries in it should solely be NATO countries, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia+New Zealand, some Latin American countries and maybe a few others. Russia, China, "moderate Arab countries" and other ninnies could be excluded.

I agree. Iraq was a democracy. After all, Saddam was elected round after round with 99.99% of the vote!

the league of democracies is a dumb idea for a number of reasons.
1. most countries in the wolrd are quasi democracies or as a freedom house says, partly free. so where do u draw the line.
2. unlike thw to where countires made changes because they could see benefits of it, it will be hard for this new org to show countires that it is worhtwhile to make the changes needed for entry.
3. not geographically spread out, u ignore the entire middle east and centeral asia.
4. you ignore china wihich is defently a world power.

You guys missed the real point here...

Romney says we should "withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council"...we aren't even on it...oops!!

I agree that for the most part, the UN has not served us well. But, as a tip to potential Presidential nominees, if you are going to criticize something, at least know what you're talking about first as to not look the fool in public.

Newt Gingrich's "League of Democracies" is by far the best version of this proposal I have heard. The League's first order of business should be to draw up a "Geneva Convention" for terrorists and put an end to the question of how to handle the scum.

-And before someone else posts it. We all know. Newt cheated on his wife. We get it. Get over it.
