The Candidates on Social Security
Written by Sam on November 25th, 2007Fox News did a piece on where the five first tier candidates stand in regards to Social Security:
_ Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani: Supports private accounts. Opposes higher taxes. Favors bipartisan commission to propose changes. “I would rule out a tax increase”
_ Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney: Supports private accounts. Opposes higher taxes. Open to a reduction in promised benefits to future retirees at higher income levels. “I’m prepared to be entirely bold, but I’m not prepared to cut benefits for low-income Americans.”
_ Sen. John McCain: Supports private accounts. Says obligations can be met without raising taxes. “As president, I’ll submit a plan to save Social Security, and I’ll ask Congress to do the same.”
_ Former Sen. Fred Thompson: Supports reduction in promised benefits to future retirees. Supports voluntary private accounts, with the government matching funds contributed by individual. Opposes raising taxes. “The status quo is not having a Social Security system as we know it.”
_ Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee: Supports private accounts. Would allow retirees who don’t need their benefits the option of a tax-free lump sum payment that goes at their death to children or grandchildren. Would allow higher benefits for seniors who delay retirement beyond 70. “The president had the right idea, but he used the wrong word.”

A very informative post. Thanks.
Obviously we are going to have to make changes in social security, and we sure don’t want the means tested lunacy of the left wing.

Ron Paul has a plan to end this Ponzi Scheme once and for all by letting the young people who won’t be able to collect opt-out.
The savings from ending our empire would be used to pay the benefits for those dependent on the plan.
No surprise that status quo Fox left Paul out of their analysis.

I love the American Empire. Long live America! Ron Paul needs to drop the blame america crap if he ever wants to be accepted by a majority of thinking people.

The American Empire is not the American Nation. While our troops are scattered in countries all around the world, our borders are undefended, hostile foreigners parade under their own flags in our streets, our currency is collapsing, our government is growing out of control, and the culture is a disgrace. What good is our huge military when you just walk down the streets and see your country being taken away from you?
Down with the empire, up with the Old Republic!

I don’t think Fred Thompson is a “first-tier” candidate anymore.

I agree with drageses. The country has been slipping away right in front of our faces for a long time now.

I think some people need to look up the definition of the word empire. And no one here supporting Ron Paul should be lamenting the culture slipping away. Whatever it is that americans do with their lives is their own business, right? Even if it destroys traditional american culture. Right? Of course the government spending needs to be cut and the borders locked down. Further, our dollar has been weak for years and years, and only now are the Paul people regurgitating his rhetoric on this. So, please spare us that and come up with something original.
