The Iraq war remains one of the largest expenses in the budget. I’m not a lefty whacko claiming we need to pull out now, but it seems a little wonky to simultaneously criticize the growing debt while supporting one of the largest contributors to that debt.

Also, I just saw Karl Rove speak at Duke, and he assured the audience that the national debt would be balanced by the end of Bush’s term. I am not joking or taking his words out of context.

    David,
Either you misquoted him or he misspoke. I’m certain he was referring to the budget, not the debt.

Hmmm… now that you mention it, he may have been referring to the budget. Still, not gonna happen.

I’m sure he said the budget deficit. And actually, David, the deficit is shrinking.

He had to have been talking about the budget deficit. There is no way he could have meant the national debt and have a straight face.

The deficit will disappear before 2010 or 2011 I believe. We do need to start engaging in aggressive debt reduction measures through. Ideally, I would like to see a good 100 billion of the debt paid off each year and whatever is being saved in interest payments also put towards debt reduction.

Iraq is a large part of the spending increase under Bush, but it is a plurality compared to the explosion in program spending and other discretionary spending. We should set a few goals that are realistic and begin tightening the belt in other areas. I say focus on security and infrastructure at first while rolling back increases in education and other program spending.
