Obey Has Hissy Over Budget

Written by Sam on December 11th, 2007
David Obey, D-Wis., the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, had been working with moderate Republicans to generate momentum for a catchall spending bill that split the differences between increases wanted by Democrats and the strict budget submitted by President Bush in February.

But after a White House veto threat over the weekend, a frustrated Obey said he would rip up the compromise bill and devise a new one using the strict spending ceiling set by Bush - but would reach it by whacking GOP priorities and stripping the bill of billions of dollars in pet projects for legislators in both parties.

And this is supposed to be a bad thing?  Obey has no idea how much he just made me smile.  Cut it all out, dude.  I don’t care whose side of the aisle it’s on.

I’d add another bonus for the GOP.
When next year’s RePORK card comes out, the GOP numbers will be much lower, giving the GOP the fiscal responsibility advantage, whether we like it or not!

Ben, the GOP has been less successful at getting pork projects approved because they are no longer in power. This does not represent an actual desire by congressional Republicans to cut down on pork.

Yeah, I’m aware, thats why I put “whether we like it or not” in reference to how GOP pork spending will be lower.

Why did he not cut it all out in the beginning and call himself a budget reformer? A blank slate and some spine not to allow anything into it would have ensured his place for years to come. Unless,it was his district that recieved the cuts.

This may not be a popular move on the hill. To many Congressmen with weak seats and empty palms could hurt Obey…
