Thompson Puts Foot Down at Iowa Debate
Written by Sam on December 12th, 2007This was awesome. I have gotten so sick and tired at how these debates are being moderated and the ridiculous questions they ask these candidates. This debate, in particular, the moderator was rude and did nothing but put them on the defensive. The CNN debate, of course, was the absolute worst in that they actually lied about the questions that would be asked.
Apparently, Fred Thompson had enough of it too. Check this out. The good part starts at around 40 seconds in.

Yeah… I must say that Thompson’s performance there was the best I’ve seen by any candidate in either party. Pity he’s getting the hang of this right at the end of the debate season.
And yeah, the moderator was really, really annoying.

Using fear to get votes. We know where that got us under GWB. And you still fall for this Sam?

What a jackass. A throng of obnoxious, burly men beating up on a female small-town newspaper reporter. Might they have made the same point without the ridiculous temper tantrum?
If you want to use a bunch of rich bullies unloading their anger on a woman as the canonical image of the Republican party, be my guest!

If we’re using “burly” as the adjective here, I think it applies far more to the moderator than to most of the candidates…

If I was advising Fred Thompson, I’d make him do something in every debate which demonstrated that he actually wanted to be there. This qualifies.

The obnoxious one was the reporter asking stupid questions that required raising a hand with no explanation. Not to mention she, not Thompson, looked like a jackass by refusing to give him a minute to actually respond to a question. I thought we were supposed to be watching a debate yesterday, not a yes-or-no session with a reporter.

She was no doubt the worst moderator I’ve seen in these debates.

The profiles of the Candidates in the WashPo have been unremarkable thus far, including the one about McCain today:
But one line stood out today, regardless of what one might think about McCain’s various stances on issues in the past, this is definetly true: “McCain may never become president, but he’ll end this race with something many rivals have left on the campaign trail: dignity. “

I’ll agree with you there. Though I have disliked McCain for many reasons in the past, and still have major disagreements with him, he has conducted himself in a classy and gentlemanly manner in this race. I don’t want him to be President, and he’ll probably tick me off again in the future, but he has stayed away from demagoguery or rank pandering unlike many candidates.

They are running for President of the United States. Who is this pest who tells Fred Thompson he cannot explain himself?

I’m amazed at your reaction to this. I agree with you that the question format was silly, but my point is that he could have communicated this in some way other than having a temper tantrum. Is this really the kind of behavior that appeals to the base of the Republican party?
Maybe this is why liberals listen to NPR (information — admittedly tilted though it may be), while conservatives listen to Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaigh (obnoxious diatribes and childish insults).
If you think this is how people should behave, I shudder to think about how you treat your wives and your children when you get upset.
