New Hampshire Conservatives Abandoning Romney

Written by Sam on December 26th, 2007
THERE IS A reason Mitt Romney has not received a single newspaper endorsement in New Hampshire. It’s the same reason his poll numbers are dropping. He has not been able to convince the people of this state that he’s the conservative he says he is.Like a lot of people in New Hampshire, we wanted to believe Romney. We gave him the benefit of the doubt. We listened very carefully to his expertly rehearsed sales pitch. But in the end he didn’t close the deal for us. Now, two weeks before the primary, the same is happening with voters.Republicans and right-leaning independents in New Hampshire gave Romney a chance. His events have not been sparsely attended. Nor have they been scarce. He’s made more campaign stops here this year than any other Republican, even John McCain.

And after a year of comparing Romney to McCain, of sizing up the two in person and in the media, Granite Staters are turning back to McCain. The former Navy pilot, once written off by the national media establishment, is now in a statistical dead heat with Romney here.

How could that be? Romney has all the advantages: money, organization, geographic proximity, statesman-like hair, etc.

But he lacks something John McCain has in spades: conviction.

Granite Staters want a candidate who will look them in the eye and tell them the truth. John McCain has done that day in and day out, never wavering, never faltering, never pandering.

Mitt Romney has not. He has spoken his lines well, but the people can sense that the words are memorized, not heartfelt.

The Union Leader

We have a Bingo! I have been saying this for months. Romney is not genuine. His record as governor and his campaign stances when running for the U.S. Senate completely conflict the supposed views he now espouses. Every time I listen to him I just feel like he sounds scripted. We have eight days until Iowa. He could still possibly come out on top there, but I don’t think he is going to have an easy battle in New Hampshire.

Sorry but the Union Leader and Concord Monitor newspapers are LIBERAL papers! They are pro-choice, pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-tax, etc., etc., They are trying to support McCain who is not a true conservative - re: his tax and immigration positions. The TRUE conservatives will line up behind Romney!

McCain never wavering? What’s that writer smoking? McCain always telling the truth? You mean like when he repeatedly, obnoxiously, and dishonestly distinguished himself from Romney by saying that Romney had flip-flopped and McCain hadn’t–and angrily, obnoxiously, dishonestly denied Romney’s charge that McCain had flip-flopped on Roe v. Wade since the last time he ran for president?

McCain is such a liar. I can’t understand why so many conservatives have bought into this idea of McCain the straight-talker. McCain and Giuliani, actually–both of them. Conservatives all across the fruited plain say, “I disagree with them on numerous issues, but at least they’re honest.” No, they’re not honest. They both twist the truth like Clinton, to borrow a phrase McCain used against Bush in 2000.

Conservatives who back that indisputable RINO John McCain will regret that decision for the rest of their lives. You can bargain with the devil, but you will always get a horrible deal.

McCain and Giuliani have not really tried to hide who they are. Anyone who thinks they are diehard conservatives probably should get a mental examination asap.

Agree with him or not. McCain is alot more steadfast on his beliefs than Romney.

They are not always conservative beliefs, but they are his beliefs.

Joe, re: McCain flip-flopping on Roe–you should be embarrassed if you didn’t know this.

Pay attention to what John McCain says. He hates the “Christian Right,” i.e. persons opposed to Roe, homosexual marriage etc who happen to attend church regularly.

“The Union Leader’s advocacy of John McCain has become so fierce and lopsided that it has practically transformed itself into a pro-McCain 527 organization. It has not formalized the arrangement, which is lucky for it: If it had, McCain would, on his campaign-finance principles, have to try to shut it down. “

What McCain said, that I was referring to, was:

“I’d love to see a point where it [Roe v. Wade] is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary. But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe vs. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to (undergo) illegal and dangerous operations.”

So there you have it. In 1999 McCain said that abortion is “necessary” and that Roe v. Wade should never be overturned–not in the short term, nor even the long term.

But, Joe, I really like what you contributed to this discussion. Your quotation was actually funny.

I am a staunch republican. The worst thing that could happen to this country is to elect a Dem president. However if John McCain is the only Republican choice I will sit this one out.

John McCain betrayed this nation, and all the brave soles that have given their lives for it by authoring the massive amnesty bill which would have gone a long way toward distroying our constitution, and giving out country over to Mexican control.

So it is my thinking that losing the country with a Dem at the helm will be no worse than losing it with McCain in control. Either way were screwed.

How Can any conservative vote for Romney?

He was listed as one of the top ten Republicans in Name Only by Human Events Magazine.

What will he be after the primary?

And would he be another George Bush if he gets elected?
