Witherspoon on the Air

Written by Sean on January 21st, 2008

Lindsey Graham’s first serious opponent in the South Carolina Senate race is on the air targeting the incumbent on immigration.

Honestly, I think this ad goes way over the top and plays very nicely into Graham’s accusation that many opponents of the McCain immigration plan were driven by racism.  The McCain plan, which Graham supported, was a disaster for several reasons, and Graham left himself open to plenty of legitimate means of attack.  Personally, though, I don’t think this was one of them.  Fortunately former Myrtle Beach Mayor Mark McBride is also in the race.

Sean, I agree that the ad is over-the-top. Hopefully the other candidate has more sense than that.

I agree. Also, the ad is just unprofessionally done–very cheap-looking, and cheap-sounding (the way everyone talks in English in the ad). The shot of Witherspoon nodding while talking on the cell phone looks ridiculous, and the muted way he says “I’m Buddy Witherspoon and I approve this message” is grating.

Plus, the ad isn’t explicit enough about the differences between Witherspoon and Grahamnesty. It should remind voters that Miss Lindsey repeatedly voted to enact amnesty for illegal aliens. It doesn’t do that. You can’t just do the “press 1 for English” thing and then say “Enough is enough.” You’ve got to be a lot more explicit if you want to get the voters to back you.

    My two cents.

Oh… and let’s hope that Grahamnesty has only ONE primary opponent in June.

How old is that phone he’s holding? Did he take that video in 1993?

Poorly executed ads like that have a tendency not only to backfire on the candidate, but backfire on the message too. If that’s the best Witherspoon can do, he needs to get the hell out of the race and let a competent candidate take a shot at Graham instead.

Yeah that add crossed the line and into racism.

Might be the worst ad I have seen in years.
