Rumors of Pawlenty in VP Slot Abound
Written by Sam on February 17th, 2008
Even through the McCain campaign’s darkest days in 2007, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty remained a steadfast ally to the Arizona senator in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.
As a result, with John McCain as the clear GOP front-runner and insider talk turning to speculation about his possible running mate, party insiders are now buzzing about the 47-year-old, second-term governor’s vice presidential prospects.
The rumor mill is abuzz with talks of Tim Pawlenty in the VP slot for McCain’s presidency. This has been speculation for some time and I think it would be a very logical choice. Minnesota has stuck hard with the Democrats in presidential elections but it’s getting closer and closer to the Republicans’ grasp. I don’t know if Pawlenty on the ticket would be enough to flip it this year, but hope springs eternal.

This should be no surprise…Pawlenty has long been a McCain cheerleader.
He might help McCain lose Minnesota by just 8 or 9 points instead of 10 to 12.

Gceres… I do not think there has been a Republican in recent memory lose Minnesota by 8 or 9. Remember this is the state that has a tendency of electing moderate Republicans: Norm Coleman and also a very strong independent streak. If I had to pick three states McCain would have the easiest time flipping, Minnesota would be one of them.

He is generally considered a conservative. His real claim to fame is cleaning up the budget mess left by Jessie Ventura without raising taxes.

I know you didn’t just insult The Body, Ryan. You better watch yourself.

You mean Jessie “the Mind is a terrible thing to waste” Ventura.

In Florida the buzz is that Gov. Charlie Crist is a possible VP pick. He has been traveling with McCain since early in the year and endorsed him prior to the FL primary, which could have been what threw FL to McCain.

I am hearing rumors that Lieberman might have a place in McCain’s cabinet. Lieberman also endorsed him, and they are ideologically not that different on many issues…

I keep seeing people on other blogs mention Senator Thune as VP pick. I don’t see why people are floating his name around. He is a porker, McCain doesn’t like porkers. McCain is probably going to look for a governor or someone with cabinet level experience and not a senator. But if he was going to pick a Senator why would he pick Thune? Senator Burr would be a much better pick if McCain decided to go with a senator.

I really doubt McCain would go for a Senator. He will most likely go for a governor seeing I think a cabinet member would be too close to the status quo. He needs a clean break with a strong outsider from Washington. Pawlenty, Crist, Sanford, Palin all fit this mold.

David, I wouldn’t be surprised if Lieberman ends up on the cabinet. I think that would be great actually, because that means Governor Rell gets to appoint a replacement and she is a Republican.

CRIST is a liberal. I pray he isn’t the VP.

Any of you guys heard the new radio ads with Pawlenty begging for global warming legislation? [Vomit]

Yes, I heard the Pawlenty ads this morning on the radio on my way into work. In fact, I was going to write about it and then I forgot.
I don’t want him anyway. I want Sanford as the VP.

Crist is conservative, especially on fiscal issues. He pushed through this outrageously regressive property tax cut in the first year of office, slashing local services across the state. You know, the kind of thing that you guys love — no more libraries or schools for poor kids. He also rammed through a constitutional amendment with another tax giveaway.
Jeb Bush didn’t even have the nerve to try this.

Sarah Palin for VP! She is by far the best choice!
