A nod to Congressman Mark Kirk

Written by Alex on March 3rd, 2008

My home district congressman Mark Kirk (R-IL), whose first campaign in 2000 was my introduction to the world of electoral politics, has become the first appropriator in the United States House of Representatives to swear off earmarks.

The Club for Growth has the full list of members of congress who support the moratorium on earmarks.

So has anyone given any thought to who the Republicans should run for Senate if Obama wins the White House or even resigns to focus on his White House run? I know the IL GOP has a pretty thin bench but it is a big state so they should be able to come up with someone.

Mark Kirk maybe? I wish Peter Fitzgerald would run again but I think he is living in Virginia now anyway.

“He has flipped the right way though.”

Absurd. The critique of Kerry was that he lacked conviction and thus changed his mind with the political winds. In many cases he had flipped towards a side you agree with.

You can’t criticize one person for changing fundamental positions and not another just because one is from your party. That’s called “hypocrisy”, or being a “partisan hack”.

Admittedly, Kerry was running for President and this guy is not, and there were a lot of other problems with Kerry.

I never was critical of people changing positions once. Now if Kirk changes his stance again that would be problematic.

I do not understand the anti-changing of positions position myself. People do change their minds a lot so why cannot our leaders do it without getting called panders or whatever.

The problem with Kerry is that he made it easy with his various statements that made classic political ads.

Kirk killed the Bridge to Nowhere and now is the first appropriator to ask for new earmarks - impressive.
